Can you just "hollow out" a catalytic converter with a broomstick?

I wonder if anyone has done this on an 84-85, remove the converter, cut the rear Y pipe so it can be lengthened, & bolt the rear Y pipe to the front one. Then you can weld in the rear sections going to the mufflers. I'd do it at the straight portion of the rear Y pipe.

I've got to ask, what are you trying to accomplish? I hope you don't think you'll gain any kind of significant boost in performance. my 2-cents, FWIW -- not a bad idea, but more of a dumb idea -

Some people want the nose to "advertise speed", some have it plugged and don't want to pay to fix it. I tried running a test pipe and decided to install a Random Technologies cat because I was tired of the extra noise. I don't think it takes enough power away to count unless you are a race car where every little bit might help you win the purse.

I had a test pipe on my 85 when I purchased the car. i'm thinking the original owner installed it, since the 2nd owner only had the car for a short period. when I installed a new cat, I really didn't notice any, seat of the pants, performance gains. i'm thinking modern day cats flow a lot better than the stuff from the early days.

- that pretty much says it all.

But it will drone so unless you have some sort of reason, I wouldn't. I did get pulled over for loud exhaust before. Sure, I got off but that is another story. It was the hassle.

I couldn't tell a difference in my 86 pre and post cat gutting other than it was louder. 1/4 mile times were the same.
Which is strange since closing the power effects mufflers off to quiet mode killed performance compared to the wide open setting. But the cat had no effect other than noise.

Maybe the cat was NOT the choke point. Maybe the exhaust manifold was the choke point?
