1991 California Cat Question
Need to replace cat in 1991 corvette Vin 8 engine. Looking at Magnaflow Cat# 38441 and Pre-cat# 37487. Any comments helpful as its damn confusing trying to figure out the right parts for this state.

good luck in getting it shipped. it is now illegal to import unless you have a shop lic to import Catalysts.
you can ship it to a friend out-of-state though. The state is trying to make sure you put on the right size and type and they have created a bureaucracy to record serial numbers that muffler shops have to report. It's so stupid, you could go to a neighboring state, hit a rock and get a replacement without a s/n and then they are going to hassle you about it later.

I tried ordering that cat for my 85. The vendor cancelled the order because I live in CA. I was able to get a factory looking Random Tech cat from TPiS. More expensive but it flows well. Not sure what the smog checks are like where you live but here they really don't check for the EO numbers on the cat. As long as its there and the sniff is good they don't care.

I have 2 1/2" exhaust on my 88. It has hi flow Pypes bullet cats where the precats should be and a high flow aftermarket cat for a main cat. The smog tech never looked under the car to check for a number on the main cat. It passed the sniffer test. The numbers were real good. They should be seeing I have 3 cats!
Some C4 Vette owners have passed with just the bullet cats and no main cat. Other remove the main cat and replace it with a crossover pipe so you have dual exhaust. They put the cat back on to pass smog.

I live in Sacramento. Been trying to pass smog for a month or so. Just went to Midas on Friday and got Magnaflow #38019 put on my '86, for $280 installed. Passed smog immediately thereafter. I could have spent $100 less messing with trying to get one snuck in online, but well worth the cash to have someone else do it while I was at work. One shop was trying to jam a direct fit down my throat for $475 plus installation, saying that was the only one authorized. Midas insisted that universals are perfectly fine as long as they are stamped for CA. At this point, just happy to have passed. Looking for real estate in Oregon..
