Default L98 Pics

I took these at Funfest '09 in Mike Yeager's "My Garage". The lady that worked there was kind enough to remove the chains from the display area so I could get up close.
Someone here requested these as I had posted them back in Sept after the show and wanted to see them again. Kind of nice to see how the setup looks from the factory.
This is a Corvette Challenge engine.

very cool pictures because there is alot of history in the challenge cars, but to think how low hp those motors are now a'days compared to high performance vehicles. kinda crazy!

is that green marking to make sure they didn't tamper with the motor? on the exhaust manifold bolts, VC's, etc.

99% sure you are right. Need an expert to verify this though.

I'll take distributor, EGR riser pipe (with heat wrap), dipstick, plenum breather hoses, TB (with sensors and the cover in the picture) and valve covers (with oil cap/emblem). Email me with shipping totals.

You are correct. I'm not an expert, but I have talked to a couple of Challenge racers. They affectionately called that green paint 'monkey snot'

You know the stock L98 has over 330 ft. lbs. of torque. Even today 330+ ft. lbs of torque is a pretty potent number. The L98 is still a torque monster and few modern competitors can beat its low end grunt.

As you know these engines hit their top torque #'s at about 3300 rpm and there top HP #'s at about 4300 rpm. Accordingly, you could rocket out of the corners and run all day long without straining or damaging the engine. This is why C4 Corvettes dominated all showroom stock, endurance racing and most SCCA event for years. No one could touch these cars. If you remember, Porsche even complained to sanctioning officials that the cars were TOO FAST and too dominate and they insisted that the Corvettes be forced to ADD BALLAST weight. Ferrari simply refused to race against the C4 Corvettes.

Ultimately history will recognize the C4 Corvette as a significant endurance track car which dominated its class and had no performance peers within or even near its price range at the time.

Still enough to pull a stump out. The 5.3's in the newer chevy silverados are only pushing about 330 ft/lbf.

Not fast cars by todays standards but they can get out of a corner well.

The #5 and #7 plug wires appear to be reversed.

Well said. It's unfortunate to see the C4 bashed the way it is on here sometimes in other sections especially by those who don't know the generation's history. And as much as it gets ragged on, I swear I see more L98s in hot rods of all years and cars than any other engine. Good motor.

thanks. i am all to familar with what kind of hp/tq the L-98 makes. infact my untouched motor made 330rwtq (exhaust mods) which is in the ballpark of 380 flywheel torque, but after driving the car for 7 years i got tired of the stock power that the L-98 offers.

the L-98 will certainly get u out of a corner, but you will get passed down the straight away.

That metal plate that holds the wires by the EGR pipe is a pain to deal with when you replace the wires.
