Hey, I wanted to replace my stock sound system for something better, not to mention my speakers damaged anyways. I won't be needing a CD player, i'll just use and Ipod. So basically I guess I just need 4 speakers, an amp, and a sub right? Anyone recommend what brand and where to get these? Also what size speakers? 92 Vette Coupe.
Not looking to spend a LOT, just want a decent sound system. Not trying to compete with anyone on having the most hardcore sound system.
I would look around Crutchfield. might be a few dollars more than ebay or amazon but they have always stood by their stuff with me for the last 20 or so years..
if you aren't looking for awesome most head units come with enough amp to push 45 watts. enough to make ok noise come out.
A standard 6x9 three way fits in the back with minor trimming of the plastic and drilling of two small holes. simple stuff. I would recommend a little pillow stuffing in there to dampen it.
you most likely will need an antenna adapter for the cable.. not sure about a 92. no worries most local installers should have them in stock so you can wait till you get in there to find out for sure,
you can reuse the bose speaker wires by cutting off the ends or you can run your own if you are feeling adventurous.
I am not sure about the front speakers because I have an 86.
I would recommend running a differet ground than the factory one-- it will help with the noise.
i like the pdx5 amp because of its size and power. i did not want anything visible so i put the amp in one storage box and the sub in the other. you can reuse the bose speaker wires but i would recommend running new wires, its really not that hard. speakers and sub are a personal preference, mainly how much you want to spend. you can fit 6.5s up front and in the rear or 6x9s in the rear. some folks dont even bother with speakers in the rear, just a good set of components up front, and sometimes will put 8" subs in place of the rear speakers. alpine makes a head unit that does not have a cd player and is specifically designed for digital media.
I was told that if I want to replace my system (bose) for that "decent" sound, I'll have to kick out about 1k just to have the oem bose ripped out and a normal system put in. I figured I'd save up about 3k and get a "really decent" system. Of course I also demand that my music will make your eyes bleed too so take it for what it's worth. I'd like to fill the entire bay with a DVD/CD combo. I'm not a fan of the single bay decks. I do believe with the right combo, you could really make a C4 rock with a smalll sub in the back. Just from dropping stuff in back, sounds like it could really carry sound well.
I think I spent about $1k on mine, and I just did it myself. For a sub, im using a Diamond Audio D3 8" in a tiny enclosure I made to fit flush up against the rear wall and sub up port to the side. For an amp I used an Autotek mm1400 which is total overkill for that D3 sub, but I just turned the gain down on it. The little 8" rattles my rearview mirror.
At one point, I had this in the back :
Thats an Atomic APX 15",had 4000 watts to it, did a 150.2 on the Termlab. Ok, just a little bit overkill
I swapped out the Bose system for Alpine. I installed two amps in the driver side cubby hole (1 for sub and 1 for other speakers). I mounted an 8 inch JL Audio sub in the passenger cubby. I put 6x9 Alpine speakers in the back using the factory mounting and 6-1/2 speakers up front. Had to fabricate some mounting plates for the front speakers. Got everything through Crutchfield for a total of $1,250. Sounds great. The 8 inch sub puts out more bass than you would expect.
Do I have to replace the stock deck if I replace speakers? I was wanting to just get new speakers/sub/amp and use a tape player to ipod.
You cannot use the stock deck with an after market system...or by the time you figured out a way to make it work, you would probably be out more money and time than just buying a brand new head.
