I have a 1986 that just won't idle. It starts easily enough but I have to continually feather the gas pedal to keep it running. It seems that when I step on the pedal the car wants to stall but when I release it, it seems like it revs up (the reverse of what I would expect to happen). It runs rough by the way, with the occasional "pop" (like a backfire). As soon as I release the pedal, it stalls. Any ideas?...this thing is driving me nuts. (No pun intended)
I had to replace the idle bypass solenoid in my 87' located on the bottom right side of the throtle body. It allows air to pass when the butterflies close when you release the gas pedal. Your computer should throw a code if this is the problem. I am told that this is a common easy to fix problem.
Check the car for stored trouble codes first.
Doing some standard maintenance is always a good thing.
Fuel pressure checks might be in order.
Clean/check the IAC (idle air control sensor).
Check voltage at the TPS (throttle position sensor) should be be ~ .54 volts.
Might want to check the exaust system to see if it is flowing freely and not glowing at the converter(s).
