Default My so called budget built CA smog Legal Money Pit.

The Car 1986 C4 with (5.7) 350 2 bolt main 148000 on the clock.
Ran good compression seem good.
Did not smoke ran cool, trans was tight but I never happy it’s time to get my hands dirty.
But I purchased this car first of the year it was sitting outside in a field for the last 7 years last time it was ran before I got it was 3 years ago.
Had it running after a week repainted the car in my garage myself trying to save some money New seats New door panels, Rebuilt dash cluster New A/C system New Brakes Rotors Ect new tires.
Now it motor and trans time.
I putting in a 4 bolt main 355 motor with the following.
Trick Flow 23 195 heads,
Howards cam and lifters 288/288 Duration, 447/447 Lift 110 C/L 1100 to 5200 RPM range Computer freindly cam
Scorpion Roller rockers 1.5
Comp cam push rods
Comp cam timing set
Kevko hot rod oil pan 7 inch deep pan.
Edebrock EGR, TPI HI Flow base intake.
SLP Runners
Custom Chip,
FIC 24# Injectors
Magna Flow Mufflers.

If the numbers are right I should be seeing around 380 to 390 HP and 427 TQ at 5400 RPM's.

Now here some pictures so far what’s been done

But a couple things I can tell you already save yourself some extra cash Make sure you get a R/H oil stick 1 piece crank seal motor I think it going to cost me a extra $300.00 in parts I got a L/H side dip stick my Mess up.

Old Motor Out.

What kind of issues did you encounter because of the LH dipstick? I can see it would need a different pan.

Have you bolted down the heads yet?

When I got my ZZ4 short block, I pulled the pistons and crank and had them balanced. It will give you a much smoother running motor. This was a brand new GM crate short block, so you would think things would be balanced and the block would be clean. I had a motor builder in Seattle pass on this bit of advice years ago. He had me wipe the cylinder walls with toilet paper dipped in automatic transmission fluid. He told me to keep changing the TP and wiping until the TP came out clean. Here is a picture of what I got out of the new ZZ4 block.............

You might consider doing this if it is not too late.

Yes it balanced and wiped down before the heads went on.

It's been many years last time I did a car motor but about every other year I was building bike motors.

And TP leave lint traces behind.

Its going to be a great motor. I think you are expecting a lot of HP from a TPI intake though. Good luck.

Good luck on your build. Your cam seems pretty steep. What is it's duration at .050?

288* @ .050? Doesn't sound right. Not to rain on your parade, but I think your HP numbers are pretty optimistic. That's not that much cam lift and with the stock exhaust manifolds 380-390 HP is going to be though. With 28 lb. injectors you'll need to reprogram the ECM aswell.

Looks good! Waiting for parts sucks though.

28 pound injectors are going to be waaay too much for the build you've outlined for us. I would encourage you to use the stock 22's with the addition of a AFPR to bump up the output...or get some 24's.

If you could get a hold of some Cali smog leagal headers I think you'll be closer to your HP/torque goals.

There are no Cal legal headers for an 86, I know I also own an 86 and have swap exhaust systems every 2 years to get it smogged. But my Accel superram is and well worth the cost and install hassle. I agree with going with 22-24 lb injectors. If you do you won't have to reprogram the ECM.

are the trickflows exhaust ports the same size as your stock exhaust manifolds? i think the stock exhaust manifolds might need to be opened up a bit.

it sounds like the plug in horsepower kork is going to be your exhaust. if i were you, you can get a set of slp or edelbrock (1 3/4 primaries) shorty headers, have your stock smog tubes welded on to them, and modify the stock heat shields, they will look completely stock with bigger tubes. these are not better than full length headers but way better than the stock exhaust manifolds and still pass the visual inspection at the smog station.

also to compliment your headers, get some high flow magnaflow cats.
