How to remove a Steering Wheel with Airbag??
I am looking to get the steering wheel off my '90 but I dont want the airbag to blow up in my face. I also want to keep everything intact so I can sell it. I did a search and all I came up with was that I need a puller to get the actual wheel off, but nothing on removing the airbag.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I don't have the FSM with me, but it will give you detailed instructions on how to remove the wheel. As for the airbag, once you disconnect the battery there's nothing to fear there.

There is a thick yellow wire that runs down to the base of the steering column into a splitter where you can disconnect it. This is the wire for the airbag. The FSM calls out disconnecting this wire. I cannot verify if disconnecting the battery alone will make this step unnecessary, so I did this when I removed mine. Unfortunately, you have to remove the knee bolster to get to it, not technical, just a bunch of screws. After that, there are (2) T30 torx screws on the backside of the steering wheel holding in the airbag. Remove those then disconnect the yellow wire inside and your done. I waited about 20 minutes after disconnecting the battery before I started, just to be safe.

When I took my 96 apart, I didn't realize that the airbag was part and parcel with the center pad that is the first thing that comes off. After removing the four small torx screws that go through from the rear (a feat in itself) and pulling off the pad assembly that I had thought was just a cover, I found myself holding a live airbag. Nothing happened, but I'm not recommending the procedure.
If your model is similar there will also be wiring from the horn switches connecting the pad to the column. Mine had disintegrated and needed to be replaced.

I'm putting a sparco in my 96. Thanks for any advice

Just use the right size and a ratchet. After you pull the battery wait 10 minutes or use something that uses power.

I don't believe that you can actually remove the screws completely, they're "suspended" in the steering wheel and will just spin when they're released from the air bag. I've never done a '94 but I believe the TORX was a T30 on an earlier steering wheel. I'd expect the same or maybe a T27 - start with the T30.

Are you using a TORX and what size of TORX? My earlier style adventures weren't an issue at all. It should be quite straight forward I'd think. It's just 4 bolts! I've looked at a couple eBay offerings and the bolts are missing so it's apparent that they should be able to be removed completely. I believe they're M6X1.0 so I'd think that a T30 required.

You can't use a torx screwdriver (well you can, but its not easy). Find a slim torx bit set and use it with a ratchet and small extension. Can't remember off the top of my head but I think my 94' was a T30 as well.

There is barely enough room to screw the but
The hub goes all the way down and contacts the blinker bezel thing. Ps-it's a sparco hub and my car is a 96
Finally got the stupid screws out. Thanks for all the advice! ......on another note.......the hub adaptor I purchased from car ID doesn't fit. Don't think I'm doing anything wrong but just checking to see what you guys might think.

I have no experience with airbags but I have read some things on the subject. The big thing I've read is if you plan to remove it, as was stated before disconnect the battery and let it set for 20-30 minutes before touching it. Apparently there is a capacitor like unit in them that will fire them for some time even after the battery is disconnected for a period of time.
Better safe than sorry.
