Default Can you mix pistons?

What are the pros and cons? I have a LT4 that needs 2 pistons replaced. Can"t find OEM so am looking at having to install after market. What are issues with mixing old a new pistons in car,or should I replace all eight?

The rotating assembly will be out of balance. Buy 8 pistons and have them balanced to the weight of the old ones.

If you buy a set of matched pistons you may not be necessary to weight match them to the original. Ask your machinist.

If you are going to go the poor man's route, you'd be better off getting a couple of good used pistons from an engine rebuilder's tear downs if you can find one dimensionally in spec still. I've been known to make a repair like that on occasion, but never on a V8. Usually 8 stock hypereutectic pistons aren't that expensive.

I -just- took a set of the stock flat-tops to the machine shop on Friday with a block that is getting worked over - if you can wait until after thanksgiving I'll see if they've still got them and I can ship them to you - just pay the shipping.....

I think you should build a blowup engine and have some fun while you build the engine that you are going to keep in the car. Take it out and drive the blowup engine to it's limits just after you finish building your permanent engine, and when it blows, put your overhauled engine back in.
