Lack of fluid should mean that the clutch wouldn't disengage except toward the bottom of petal travel. My problem is the opposite... it's like I have too much residual pressure even when the petal is at the top.
To get an idea if the clutch is nearing the end of its life, check for slippage. Try accelerating from about 2000 rpm in 5th (to keep the speed down) and see if you can detect any slippage. If you do, it is time for a replacement.
