front pump alignment tool: i used a couple of really large hose clamps coupled together.

oil pump removal tool: yes i used that. as i recollect, that was a critical one.

i can't remember if i bought the input clutch hsg spring compressor. i think i bought something equivalent, but with wider application usage.

i don't recall using an output shaft support fixture...

sorry, it's been a few years since i did my 700R4.

i got some good general tranny rebuild tips out of the HP Book on TH350's by Ron Sessions. I also had the 700R4-specific ATSG books, of course.

Hi Mike,

The input housing spring compressor and rear case spring compressor for Low/Reverse you have shown in your photos,
You need them both. A good purchase to make your 700R4 trans rebuild go much smoother.

You also need a Forward Clutch Piston Inner Seal Protector,

Need an Overrun-Coast clutch piston inner seal protector,

Turbine shaft seal ring installer and the seal ring sizing tool.

For installing the FOUR 1-piece white teflon seals on the input drum steel shaft.

Those are the must have tools to overhaul your 700R4 trans without any problems ripping or tearing seals up.

Even if you Nick a seal slightly,Your trans rebuild wont last long. The correct tools prevent this from happening.

Pump alignment tool for aligning both front pump halves is Good to have also.

I recommend Purchasing a new Reverse Input Drum. The 2-4 band rides on it.

The 2-4 drum gets Concave shaped towards its center from use, and will show quite a bit of wear after 100,000 + miles of use.

I would try and purchase a New Reverse Input Drum from your Chevy dealership. should be around $130 or less with the good guy discount.

They are available aftermarket too, but may be cheap china units or reman reverse input drums.

New GM 700R4/4L60E Reverse Input Drums are Best.

Making your 2-4 servo pin length adjustments or swapout for a different length pin goes much easier with a New GM reverse input drum. Much less fussing around.

Also need a dial indicator set, feeler guages, torque wrenches, and a good pair of transmission snap ring pliers.

If you can find the Kent Moore 2-4 Band Adjustment Tool, that would be nice also.

That took me a while to find to add to my 700R4-4L60E overhaul tool collection.

You can get by OK checking 2-4 servo Pin band Adjustment-Clearance with a dial indicator set.

But the Factory Kent Moore 2-4 band adjustment guage tool works great !

Be sure to watch for correct orientation of all the Needle bearing thrust washers. It will be shown in your Factory GM service manual.
Dont want to get any of them upside down. That would be bad.

Any questions, I will be glad to answer the best I can for you.

I Love You Kitchen !

And the Harley too !

Your wife must really Love You.

Mine would kill me if I drove a Harley into our kitchen. LOL

Mike,

Kent Moore has a Website that you can check out for the correct 700R4 service tools. And prices listed also. The tools are very expensive to purchase new from them.

Why I searched on ebay last winter for them all.

Guess I was lucky finding them all when I did for a great price.

There are about a dozen sellers on ebay that specialize in reselling used Kent Moore tools.

They bought them up from the 5,000 some GM dealerships that closed down during the 2007-2009 US Recession.

The tools are out there you need used.

I recall seeing some aftermarket service tools for the 700R4 and 4L60E trans. Dont recall who had them.

I found all the Kent Moore tools listed in my 1987 GM Corvette factory service manual.

Including the Kent Moore Transmission holding fixture that mounts to a workbench.

Spent $250 to buy all the necessary Kent Moore tools.

If you know a GM service manager or mechanic from your local GM dealership, they might let you borrow the Kent Moore tools you need.

I have done that in past for GM cars and trucks I was repairing.

I used that trick Pete,

For the Reverse Input Drum inner clutch pistion lip seal.

Wrapped the OD of the input drum inner piston bore-sleeve with thin mylar plastic.

Lubed up the plastic with ATF and Transgel.

Piston was much easier to install and no damage to inner and outer lip seals.

No factory Kent Moore Seal installer available that I know of for Reverse input housing on 700R4/4L60E trans.

By the way, the Posts here on C4 Forum on rebuidling a 700R4 last year and Photos were of great help to me.

Read one of my old posts from earlier today.

I meant to give credit to Pete K.

I did not, typo...

Pete K. has a long thread from last year I followed along on the rebuild of a 700 R4 Auto Trans.

Excellent photographs and write up on his part.

Should Be a Sticky permantley at the top of C4 tech board.

Helped me out very much his thread when rebuilding my 1987 700R4 with the auxillary valvebody.

A friend in the trans rebuilding business back home here in Illinois gave many tips on choosing aftermarket and GM factory parts to upgrade my 700R4 for a future engine swap in the works.

Dana at Probuilt gave me many blueprinting, assembly tips, and valvebody tricks too over the telephone.

Thanks again Pete K. !

Thank you Pete K and 87/81 vette. I know I can do this with you guiding me thru the process.

This is what I did today.

I thouroughly cleaned my garage.

I pumped my tranny fluid out with my oil extractor. Got almost a gallon.

This is what my tranny fluid looked like comming out

I pulled the dist. cap. Im thinking I may need to pull the whole thing

I pulled my ehhaust and my x brace

Im going to use my motorcycle jack for pulling the trans.

Thats how far I got today. The fed ex driver came and I got sidetracked after that.

In the morning I want to yank it. Pull driveshaft first before C Beam?

I figure 2 to 3 weeks to finish my project. Im going to order my tranny tools tonight.

So I decided to drive my el camino while my vette is down. A care package from Summitt Racing arived today to supply me with some new items to enjoy while my vette is down.

Thanks again for everyones help.

A new competion plus shifter, Line Locks, and new seats.

Are the New parts for Your Vert Mike?

Nice Hurst shifter, but more like its for a Muncie M20, M21, M22 4-speed.

Or a Borg Warner Super T-10.

Be sure to leave the shifter in Neutral not park when attacking the driveshaft strap Bolts. Or pull the shifter cable from the trans.

Its a tight fit removing the driveshaft from a C4.

Turn the driveshaft by hand with trans in Neutral or turn one of the rear wheels by hand till the Rear differential companion flange is just in the right spot, driveshaft will clear the "C" Beam and floor pan with just enough room to do so.

Thats Awesome Mike !

The more Cars and Hotrods, the better I say.

Each car, truck, musclecar, and Corvette has their own personality.

Like a child of yours, or a woman. LOL

Take Your time rebuilding your 700R4.

Extra time and care you take 1st hand into the rebuild is worth it 100%.

If You can, pick up a 2 Foot or 3 foot long 3/8 drive extension with a swivel universal joint adapter. Then put your 9/16" socket on the end.

It will make it much easier to reach the Top Bellhousing bolts holding your 700R4 trans to the engine block.

Not much room between the floor of your Vette and the trans bellhousing.

Snap On, MAC, Or Matco tools are great,

But Craftsman will work just fine too.

I am in no rush. I want this to be a fun experience. I have no timeline schedules to meet.

I still have 2 other hot rods to drive. Gives me a chance to enjoy them. This is my camino.

I used an old fashioned Arbor Press with an Outer Timken Roller bearing Race to Dissasemble and reassemble my 87 700R4 Reverse Input drum.

Worked great.

You can also use a Hydraulic Ram Press with care and a used appropiately sized Outer Timken Roller Bearing race.

Compress only enough to dissasemble and reassemble.
