I have a 1987 corvette with 65k on it. After getting sick of hearing the annoying whining sound coming somewhere from under the hood, I took a screw driver to the air pump and listened...and viola, the noise was definately coming from the smog pump. I went ahead and ordered an 87' air pump. This did not fit; the holes where the bolts go were much to small. After I thought about it, it kind of made sense, as 87' headlight motors did not fit my car either, I had to go up to an '88. So i ordered an '88 air pump, it looked like it was right, but the bolts were too big.
Im fed up with ordering smog pumps. Can i just take out the smog pump and get a shorter serpentine belt?
Nope, seen it asked before, belt will rub on itself without that pulley holding it up that height. You still need to keep the existing route.
I had a noisy pump on an F body years ago, the insides are similer to an air tool motor with sliding vanes. If it's the vanes making the noise, just gut the pump. If it's a bearing then you may find it easiest to replace the bearing. Other wise there are "delete" kits that replace the smog pump with an idler pulley and a bracket to include the alternator though.

How well the belt rub itself without the pulley holding it up if the new belt is shorter than the old belt?
It's the path the belt would take without that pulley, it effectivly would want to cross its own path. Take your belt off and try the new route with a rope and see what happens

Most people consider the $149 models too high. Personally, I consider anything higher than that highway robbery.
Also, I don't think it was clear but there have been people who've successfully rerouted their setups w/o using an eliminator kit. Do a search and you'll see.
FWIW, when I went the eliminator route, I thought the factory belt was going to fit. Since I'd just bought the better, higher-priced belt, I subtracted that from the cost of the "non-eliminator-kit" route...then went that route. I don't remember if the adjustable rods are called "march" or something else,,,but there are rods that'll let you reposition your alternator where the non-eliminator option will work.
