Do I get the AFR 195 eliminator competition heads or the street heads? 65cc or 75cc? roller cam valve springs etc? Best price I have so far is $1439 US free delivery within US. Do the 0.1" raised exhaust ports cause an issue?

Nothing like having a plan that you are confident will work.

Thanks heaps everybody.

Talk to TPI421Vette about the heads. He's a distributor, forum member and great advisor.

Cheers. Any pointers with the cam? Is it only LPE that sell those? There are 3 versions of those too!

With my 4L60E, the shift points are pre-programmed by a laptop. Leave it in drive, hit the go pedal and the car does the rest.

PM TPI421Vette (Jim) about the cam too. He just finished my new 396 build today. Jim is a fountain of information.

I have the hydraulic shift version 4l60. Apparently the shift points can be adjusted mechanically. Not sure how though.

396! Yeh I have been following that thread a bit. TPI? What intake? I will have to go and check it out again.

Automatic Shift points in your 1987 Corvette 700R4 are controlled by the Mechanical Governor.

On the driver's side rear of the main transmission case there is a large black steel cover.

Pry or tap the cover off with a screwdriver and the governor assembly is underneath.

Can be done with the transmission still in the car.

You can buy aftermarket governor assemblies with a higher shift point.

Or you can custom tailor your shift points by purchasing a B&M Governor kit for your trans.

Thats if you want higher fully automatic upshifts at the track or on the street.

Craig's build is also a super ram engine.

On the cam, you don't want to over cam it. I wouldn't go much past 220 intake duration on a 350 S.R. Too much cam gives up torque, and makes the same top end hp

Yea I'm going with a 221/230 cam on the 396. But I'm able to use a little more duration because of the larger displacement. I'm also able to pass California smog tests. Like Jim says, it's very important to match the rpm range of the cam to the intake. Otherwise you give up bottom end and don't get anything back on the top end.

Where does one obtain the cam detailed info?

Great info Brian. Thanks again. I may look into that as I would rather keep my hands on the steering wheel. Another member suggested taking ones foot off the go pedal when one wants to shift. I thought that was quite a good idea too.

A quick shifting automatic transmission with higher upshifts optimized to your engine's particular combination of parts and Actual usable powerband............

Makes for more driving fun and more consistent 1/4 mile times left to shift automatically for you.

Till you get plenty of driving time at the dragstrip.

Then you can play around and experiment shifting the 700R4 trans manually yourself for faster times if desired.

Never take your foot off the gas unless your going to crash!

LOL

Getting off the gas pedal only slows your 1/4 mile run.

"Do I get the AFR 195 eliminator competition heads or the street heads? 65cc or 75cc"

One thing to keep in mind is those heads take two different intake manifold gaskets. The Eliminator takes the Felpro 1205 gasket and the Competition version takes the Felpro 1206 gasket. You had better make sure your intake manifold has a large enough area to properly seat a Felpro 1206 gasket. Chances are it might not.

You could get Jim to build you a motor. It wouldnt cost as much to ship as you think, but then again I dont live down under.

Good point! The ports on the 195 street heads match perfectly with the Super Ram ports. When I installed the Super Ram on my 195 Street heads the 1205 gaskets were a little too big. I ended up using a 1256 gasket. With the 1205's the blue seal on the gasket was showing.

The AFR 195 street heads already outflow the super ram by a good margin, so there isn't any value in spending the extra money for the comp 195 heads. And like mentioned, the 195 street heads ports line up with a super ram.
