Tire sizes?
If I went with 285/40/17's in back what size would I need in front to be a little narrower yet real close in dia. to the backs? I think I saw
255/?/17's as the offset but not sure. Anyone running the offset? I want a narrower tire to help tame the road some. Can these be rotated side to side to help with wear at all?

The factory fitted 255's on the front from '93 - '96 but on a 8.5" wide rim
Fitting 255's onto a 9.5" rim that had 275's stock might negate some of the benefits you are looking
for by stretching the tire tighter so less give in the side wall.
Stiffer ride and more bounce on ruts
That is what the factory did with the early 16" rims.
With the Z51 pkg they used the same 255 that was fitted on the base 8.5 x 16" rim and put it on a 9.5" rim for better ( stiffer) handling

Yep 255/45/17 is what the factory used on the 8.5" front rims to match up with the with the rear 285/40/17s on 9.5s.
If you have 9.5s all around the 285/40/17 all around is a nice size. A bit wider and a bit taller than the stock 275/40/17s... and I think fills the wheel well better... especially if your car isn't lowered.

Melting Slicks
I just ordered some new rims & tires. I considered 285/40/17's but noticed 9.5" was the minimum reccomended width and thought that might impact cornering or tire life. Is that an issue? I'll have to replace mine eventually.
