if you are on a steep incline it is possible you it to go backwards. The only thing holding it back is engine compression. That is if your clutch is holding correctly. That is why they have park brakes
Let's start over. When it slips, is the motor off and are you trying to use reverse as "park" or are you trying to head uphill in reverse with the motor revving?
How do you know the engine is not turning? The way you are describing it sounds like the engine is turning.. sounds like you are on to steep of an incline for the engine to hold the car sould like you need to use the park brake or try 1st gear for more reduction.
If parked on a hill of any decent size and you use only 1rst or reverse as a parking brake, it will coast down. The "clock" sequence is simply a piston going past TDC and the next piston coming onto compression. Eventually air escapes past the rings on that one and it rotates to the next.
If you have a tired motor with a lot of leaking past the rings or valves, this will happen quickly, if it's a fresh motor with very good sealing, it will happen very slowly, but either way, it will happen.. Use your e-brake! If it's broken, fix it and in the mean time carry a small chunk of wood for a wheel chock. The appearance of your car with the 2x4 under the tire will help hasten the repair of the e-brake
Hi.
I have an 85 with 4+3.
I detected that when I had it in reverse and a very little elevation on the road it slipped asit was a weak clutch.
It was not it was the overdrive unit. I discovered also that the oil from the gearbox had entered the overdrive unit. When I checked the oil level of the overdrive unit it poured oil out of the check point. So the bearing in the overdrive unit slipped and had grinded a hole in the wall so I had to change the overdrive unit. This might happen with stronger than normal engines. Following Callaway (these transmissions are used in the Callaway C-4)the gearbox manage about 450ftlbs and the overdrive less. So with acceleration it should always be without overdrive unit enabled.
Ofcourse your problem may be another, but this typical symptom was slipping in reverse and then it is not!!! the clutch.
First check the oil in the overdriveunit. If not mixed with gear oil then you may save the overdrive unit and repair it.
or me it was only one option, a new and bought and 88 version which is much stronger than my stock
Hope its not this unit Good luck
