The internals are the same for both of these trannys, with the exception of the solenoids in the 4L60E and the TV cable on the 700R4. The pump is the same. Take a look at Mad dog transmissions.

It's not a hard job but it is tedious. IIRC the bolts holding the pump in are 1/4" but in any case, whatever size they are get a couple 3-4" bolts the same size and cut the hex heads off. Take all the bolts out and replace two of them opposite each other with the cut off bolts, these will help re-install the pump. Be real careful when pulling the pump out so the clutch drum right behind it doesn't come with it. You can LIGHTLY pry the pump up a bit to get it started. Take the old pump & lay it aside. Get a new rubber ring that goes around the pump and put it on the replacement pump. Use vaseline to grease the perimeter of the pump so it will slide back in place. Tap lightly with a rubber or plastic hammer to seat the pump then remove the cutoff bolts & re-install the pump bolts then torque to specs. If you need a pump I have one out of a 700R4 in good shape but I don't know if it will work in your trans. If it will and you are interested pm me. When you re-install the converter be sure there is about 1/2" clearance between the converter & the flexplate before tightening any bolts. You may need to turn & wiggle the converter to get it all the way in but this step is critical as you already know.

The front pump is different between a 700R4 trans and a 4L60E trans.

1992 is a 700 R4 trans.

Early 700 R4's had a 7 vane pump rotor.

After 1984, 1985 & up 700R4's had a 10 vane pump rotor.

4L60E transmissions had a 13 vane pump rotor.

You need the mid year 1987-1992 front pump assembly for you 1992 trans.
Its specially built for the Auxillary Valvebody equipped 700R4 trans that your 1992 C4 Vette has.

Be sure to look over that replacement front pump assembly very closely in comparison to your original 1992 C4 trans front pump.

The Main Boost Valve and Reverse Boost Valve size in .000 inches is unique to all stock C4 transmissions.

Transfer your old boost valves if unsure.
Don't install them backwards or your trans will have low line pressure.
And fail shortly afterwards.

Check the Converter Valve also in the replacement front pump.
Any wear or scoring, not good.

Check both pump halves closely.
Must be flat and distortion free.
Must shine like a mirror all machined surfaces.

If not, pass on that front pump and keep searching till you get one in 100% perfect condition.

There are so many different changes and improvements they made on these 700R4 transmissions with each succeeding model year.

Its best outlined in the Blue and Green ATSG transmission Books.

You have to Read and Re-Read carefully each page in those books to understand all changes GM Hyrdramatic engineers made throughout the years.

It is very confusing at times to many home and professional mechanics.

I have alot of experience and knowledge like you do thats all.
Comes with years being a mechanic and working in GM dealerships.
Wrenching on racecars at night.

I'm no different from you.

I'm booksmart. Helped me ace all and every ASE test I have ever taken.

You have at least another 10 years of turning wrenches longer than I have.
That means much...............experience and lessons learned for lifetime.
Thousands of them.

Its important to share some of our knowledge with others here.
Keeping all the knowledge to ourselves doesn't do anybody much good.

I believe that all is readily available is a Used 1987-1/2 to 1992 front Pump assemblies.
Or there are several companies offering remanufactured 700R4 front pumps.

There may be a NOS GM front pump assembly for your Vette somewhere,
But it would take some searching for it.

I checked last summer at my local GM dealership for the 1987-1/2 to 1992 700R4 pump assembly.
It was discontinued.

You will need to buy the large front pump O-ring and the matching paper gasket that sits in the recess of the trans case.

Remaned 700R4 Front Pump Unit is a GM piece.

There are dozens of specialty transmissions shops to choose from.
Internet included.

I recommend Dana @ Probuilt Transmissions in California.
He is honest, very helpful, and Tech Savy like me.

Or contact Pete K. here on C4.
He is good guy, a Crafstman putting together anything, and honest too.

I have 1 spare 87-1/2 to 1992 700R4 front pump in good used condition.
Keeping it for another 700R4 trans I may put together this year for my 63 Pontiac GP.
Better fuel economy instead of the Turbo 400 trans in it now.

first thing remove pan then the lockup soleniod and reverse tube then unbolt the 13mm bolts i use a flat chissile between the pump and the drum it will come up with out much force it would be wise to dissassemble the rest of the tranny and inspect it why you ask the metal shavings can get in to the valve body sticking the tv valve and youll probley find worn 3-4 clutches most of the time the pump can be rebuilt if the body isnt damaged you should replace the rotor with a 4l60e 13vane and a sonnax boost valve its a 2 piece assembly on 700s u need both oringed with a .500 boost valve
