I know there is the big rubber oring that seals the adapter to the block but INSIDE where the adapter slides into the block- looks like an oil paper type gasket in there but the gaskets in my oil pan gasket kit dont quite match up.

Yes, gasket and O-ring.

Yes, the paper gasket goes there. On my kits that gasket has been round with two bolt holes. The gasket is wide enough that it seals the 'not really round' sealing surface of the oil filter adapter.

thanks, I had two gasket that fit , one was round with two holes, the other round with an almost correct cut out in the center (which is the one I went with) should I change to the round one? Also, I need a new oil fill tube , will an f body tube fit the corvette?

As long as it seals that surface, it should be fine.
