Default 1986 Fuel Problem??

I have a 1986 coupe with a stock L-98. The car has 75k miles. The car starts and drives fine. When doing short trips the car is a little hard to start. I can smell gas. Some people are telling me its my injectors. That they are leaking. If this is true, I would replace all of them. What is the best brand of injectors at what lb's. Is there anything else I should replace?

thanks for the help......

Before you replace injectors (22lbs), test the system. You will need a fuel pressure gauge.

I agree with Agent86. Just to clarify though, is the fuel smell coming from under the hood? If so check the fuel pressure.

From experience I had a fuel smell at the rear of my 1986 coupe. People told me it was the injectors. It was actually the seal was bad on my gas cap...cheap fix.

The fuel smell concerns me but; the hard starting after short trips does too...What are common part failures??

thanks.....

I will test the fuel system.

Could be a leaky injector.

You really need to get a fuel pressure gauge on it to see what's happening.

I appreciate the help. I really don't know what I am looking for. If I put a fuel pressure tester on....What is the correct pressure? Also am I trying to see if the car holds that pressure or goes down? What would be the correct procedure?

Also when I pull the vac hose off the FPR and find gas...What does that mean?? Or if its dry???

thanks again....matt

Did you read the PDF file ?

Fuel in the reg vacuum line means the diaphragm is ruptured and needs to be replaced.

Ok I tested the fuel pressure. With the key on 41 lbs. With the car running 36 lbs. When I turned the car off I was expecting the pressure to drop fast but; it didn't held at 40. I guess I am going back to the PDF file.

Any ideas.....

Yep.
Behind the rear of the driver's seat, the area out under the car, there is a short piece of rubber vacuum hose where they spliced the vacuum line, as the vacuum metal line came in 2 pieces on the assembly line. What is worse, is if your car got undercoating, you will have to dig around a little bit to find it. But follow the line in the undercoating, and dig at the raised area. you will find it.
Replace this hose. It is about 3 inches long and is 5/32 I think. should cost you about 50 cents at the auto parts store.
Mine was leaking about 8 years ago, and i only smelled gas after I shut the car off, or got in it to go somewhere.
Gas vapors fall to the floor, so sitting in the car made my nose low enough to detect it.
I hope that's it.

Thanks everyone. I changed my gas cap and found that small piece of rubber vac line. (mine was almost gone). After checking everything will the fuel pressure. I finally found that the TPS was faulty. The car never ran better.

thanks again.....
