Dana 36 3.42 ratio
#2
No,
Who makes that 3.42 : 1 gear ratio for a C4 Dana 36?
Never have seen it listed anywhere.
Have noticed the price increase of C4 Dana 36 & Dana 44 gearsets from all suppliers lately ?
Checked Summit Racing a few nights back on Richmond Gear gearsets for a C4/ Viper Dana 44 HD.
Was supprised........over $400.00 smakeroos.

I've got my 84 apart now, putting a new 3.54 gear in it .... didn't notice a 3.42 when I was on-line looking. Being I'm starting with a stock platform, I'm installing a stall & 3.54 gear set, and going true 2.5" duals (w/Flowmaster 50's) all the way back. I paid just over $400 for the Richmond gear set. The way I see it, this is one area I don't want to risk because gear sets only "break" at the worst time and they usually result in calateral damage too....

Thanks for all responses. If anyone has a 3.73 with auto and either tracks or autox, would like feedback.

D36 here...the 3.73's are great with the 6 speed; I would even go for a 4.10 ratio with the 6 speed with a miniram or LT1 (don't think a 36 will take 4.10's though) you might have to go with a 44.....6th gear is much more functional with 3.73's+
depends what cam you are running too, but L98's only make power to 4500 rpm or so, so gears are not always the best purchase for L98's unless you go to a miniram......
3.73's put my car in the power band very fast and I still run very low RPM's on the highway in gear 6; now if you are running an auto, that maybe too steep since ther ratios are different....

I now have a LS3 "hot cam" GMPP crate engine in my '92, coupled with the automatice 700r4 and dana 36 with 3.73 gears. The 700r4 had to be modified to run with the "drive by wire" engine, but the dana 36 and 3.73 gears were already in the car with the LT1. The gears of course really get you off the line great but also reduce your mpg. Running 85 mph the engine is at approx 2800 rpm. With the hot cam I get surging until I'm at 2500 rpm which with the 3.73 gears is about 72 mph. I don't race it at all since with SAE net hp of over 575 and net tq over 600 I would destroy the tranny and dana 36.

I think a 3.54 rear gear ratio might just be a good choice as well, and at least in my case, would probably be able to finish the 1/4 mile in third gear before I max out the rpm's as I am now, with the 3.73 gears.
That being said, if you want instant torque, and amazing hole shots (if you hook up!) the 3.73 will beat just about everything on the street out of the hole. That 3.73 teamed up with the Vette's .308 first gear is a monster!

I am running 3.73 gears in my 89 Auto, and the torque is incredible! Yes, there is a definite loss in gas mileage, but since I don't use it as a daily driver, I don't worry about the mileage too much. I have a posting here in regards to a transmission problem that is directly related to the rear end gear ratio. I ran the car in a 1/4 mile track for the first time yesterday, and my trans refused to shift into 4th gear at WOT. The problem was that I was at max rpms in 3rd gear, with about 60 feet to go! I'm investigating into a cure for the problem right now.

I know how frustrating it is to have a trans that won't shift when you want. Once mine bit the bullet, I had a 4l60 HD Full Manual built. In my opinion, it is the best thing since sliced bread. There is no delay in shifts period.
