Interesting . I figured that at almost 100k miles the rod bearings would be suspect. living in the Deep South , I can see no reason to use 5wt oil, although I did use 0/40 Mobil 1 in my Saab. after all , the jug said it was Euro oil, LOL

With 20-50 I see 35 to 40 hot idle 60 psi at 70 or so and the same at WOT maybe a tad more. I could no doubt run 10-30 ut oil pressure of 20 at hot idle I find a bit of a worry. I bout th thing as a used car and don't have the slightest idea what it went through before me or what it got for repairs. Considering the number of things I needed to fix not much got done. I think I learned just about every used car trick for a Corvette in just one car.

On the extra quart just buy a pan that holds another couple quarts.

Default Least Expensive Oil To Use

Short on $$$? Try this. After an oil change, add some balsamic vinegar to it and dip some Italian bread in it.

IMHO, if you choose to run 30 weight oil, you can't do much better than this! Pricey, but the 24k OCI makes it more cost effective.

Yes the AMSOIL motor oil is rated for 24,000-mile oil change interval with their filter. But who actually runs it that long? (Would love to see a used oil analysis.) If they were 90% highway miles, the filter was changed mid-run and fresh top-up oil was added, I could see this type of service schedule working out OK. But still... that is an *extremely* long interval.

Agreed, I don't know if my OCD could handle that interval, but I think that oil can handle it. I am coming from a series of turbo VW GTIs, With those little overachievers, oil change interval was king! I know the 350 LT1 is far more forgiving on oil than turbos are. My Vette will be a weekend, sunny day toy, so it will likely see less than 5,000 miles a year. I will definitely change the oil every year after its 6 month winter nap. For me I am thinking that any quality synthetic 30 or even 40 weight would be fine.

Guaranteed protection for up to 25,000 miles or 1 year
That is the phrase that scares me the most. "UP TO". Try this. Give me $1000 and I will return your money UP TO $50000. Think you will get that much? If you really want to see if it works, test the oil.

I tend to make excuses for why whatever is on sale at Walmart is the best.

Because people treat it like a religion and don't realize or acknowledge that this has been extensively thought out and tested by the OEM already.

So it is a weekly or is it monthly prayer to the Great Oil God?

I had my oil changed at NTB and they put in 0W-30. I inquired about the difference in what is recommended in the service manual. They said something about where we are and that is their recommended weight. I live in South Carolina. Oil pressure is the same so I’m ok with it but I will change it next time myself with the Mobile 1 5W30 oil.

Recommended because they are out of the recommended stuff, fawked up and put in the wrong thing or really recommended by their company? Really, not much difference to worry about.

Something to that effect. I think I have 10w-30 in there because it's what I had laying around... and I don't drive the thing in the winter.

I think most of the big name oils are excellent, and definitely better than in years past. I guess it comes down to whether you believe that there are other factors at play (CAFE, bean counters, etc.....) that may influence the OEM recommendations. Whatever you choose, it makes for entertaining discussions. Either way, I think we all win with today's great choices!

I think it comes down to whether you believe that OEM recommendations are based on what is best for the company or you as you said. For me, I have no doubt that OEM recommendations are based on what is best for the company and if you benefit, so be it.

Question. 2001 Ford Powerstroke coolant. Who to follow? OEM? OK. OEM who? OEM Ford who recommends green coolant with a bottle of FW-15 every 15000 miles (Which they will sell you or OEM International who recommends a ELC that lasts 300K, 12000 hours or 5 years, whichever comes first? Do you believe Ford decided that the green stuff should be changed every 45000 because it is best for YOU or that it means they don't have to stock a less used coolant? People have tested the coolant and right out of the box it failed International's recommended levels and International has an interest in their diesel engines going longer than 100K.

If we believed OEM, we'd be using Delco for our parts and never modifying our cars.

I guess the OEM recommendations should be the MINIMUM STANDARD and not the commandments of the Almighty (Insert company here). Test to know. When I switched to a synthetic oil for the Powerstroke for better winter starting, it was said that the Rotella T6 could go 6000 to 9000 or some other number for the OCI. I sent a sample in at 6000, IIRC, and they said it was almost there and shouldn't go more than 1000 over. So my OCI for that truck is 6000.

I agree. I'd add that even cheap oils are good. Back in the '80's, I had an '83 Trans Am. I drove the wee out of that thing, drag raced it some (hey, 15 second 1/4 miles are fun when you just got your license!), towed an 18' boat with it all over the place....I sold it with 200k on it to a friend, who sold it with 245k to his friend...still ran like new. The oil? Cumberlnad Farms XP Lube. $0.99/quart.
