I have a 1989 Corvette -- 6 speed manual, Z51. I just rebuilt the engine and want to put a better flywheel on it. The dual mass flywheel is making noises sometimes and it is just plain too heavy. My machinist suggested a 16 lb. steel flywheel from Speedway motors, which I got. We included a clutch kit (push instead of pull) and now I'm putting it back together. I got a TO bearing that is internal to the bell housing, but it won't fit because it doesn't give me any clearance to the clutch release fingers. It seemed like such a great solution, but.....
What have others done to put a non-dual mass flywheel on their car and how do people suggest I solve this problem? Thanks for the help.
There are thousands of threads on DMF, SMF, experiences, comments, bitches, swaps and few people sawped back.
I installed a new DFM, new TB, new clutch and press. plate, and the second I started the Vette and it made and makes noise.
If you install a SMF, your tranny will make a rattle noise. It sounds like something loose but is not. It was explained to me it is the firing order gap that makes the gears go back-and-forward in a millionth of a second.
Here is a video I like to show people with this question. The ZF was designed to use a DMF.
Yep, dont forget these were people with experience, PhDs, etc.
Meeting at the GM CEO
-Sir, we have to go back into designing a new distributor, flywheel or tranny, stronger plastic, we would like to make the C4 a bit wider and with more space in the engine bay"
-Why
-Sir, the Opti failed, the DMF makes noise out of the box, the plastic cant handle its own weight and we barely fit a woman's hand to change spark plugs.
-Screw this, we have to go into production and lets call it The Best Vette Yet. Call Joe at Motor Trend and give him a paid vacation to Aruba.
