Your C4 Dana 44 I building up for You Sammy is 1 of the very 1st C4 Dana 44's ever made.
Found a Casted in date code on the inside of the main housing.
1984...........
It did not want to photograph well at all the casting date.
On the bottom of the housing before I cleaned it up........
Read 1-19-1985.
Was hand written in by the original assembler of this C4 dana 44 rear.
All other dana 36's & dana 44's I have seen were date coded on the bottom of the main housing by a Computer etching machine.
Old 1980's computer Italic numerals always.
Not yours,
Hand written in,
got removed from cleaning.
Otherwise dingy area on bottom would not shine like rest of aluminum housing & batwing.
Your entire 1985 C4 Dana 44 is in excellent condition after 27 years.
Housing is rigid, not sprung like many I have seen in the past.
All bearing bores in excellent condition.
No defects anywhere.
Going to be a very NICE Freshly rebuilt C4 Dana 44 for You when I am done.

Yes,
I am kinda like Pete K. is with Automatic transmissions when it comes to building rearends.
He has his tricks of trades too.
I will point out key assembly details later on.
Let the pics do the talking for now.
Much of building rear differentials is by my own experience for the past 25 years.
Some key Build by "Eye & Feel with my own eyesight & feedback with my 2 hands" hard to relay in writing.
There is certain sound of Ring & pinion backlash & feel rotating a correctly assembled rearend I know by heart.
Even in my sleep.
Been doing rear end builds that long.
Since 1987.
Pattern test final word in Pics.
To come later this week.

Looking at this from my phone last night, and it looked like Darth Vaders helmet rather than a gearset, thought wtf
Interesting stand for the rearend..sure it will go together well
See you got the most important tool there, BFH

Great looking job Brian. If you'd plug up that pinion hole I would fill it full of chili and eat out of it. That's cleaner than my dishes. I'll be going to Oklahoma and getting me a 3.45 off a forum member soon and if it makes any sounds at all I'll bring it up to you. Heck, I could just drive from OK to you and let you check it out before install.
Now there's an idea. You drink what?
