I have a problem with my aircon in my 1987 corvette. The other day when driving I heard some strange noises and the engine was running rough. The aircon was not activated.
I looked in the engine compartment and the aircon compressor was seizing on/off (causing the rough running) and all of the metal (aircon) lines/parts was covered by a thick layer of ice (3-4 mm or so)
I shut the engine off and removed the power cable to what I believed was the clutch for the aircon pump to disable it.
An undercharge also can cause icing, and short-cycling of the compressor. However, if you're certain that the A/C was not selected on the control panel (and that includes the Defog position), then there's a short somewhere causing voltage to be applied to the compressor clutch.
