Default Aircon overcooling?

Hi

I have a problem with my aircon in my 1987 corvette. The other day when driving I heard some strange noises and the engine was running rough. The aircon was not activated.

I looked in the engine compartment and the aircon compressor was seizing on/off (causing the rough running) and all of the metal (aircon) lines/parts was covered by a thick layer of ice (3-4 mm or so)

I shut the engine off and removed the power cable to what I believed was the clutch for the aircon pump to disable it.

The aircon has been converted to r134a by a PO

Any ideas to what went wrong?

It may have been overcharged. The amount of 134a is different than the amount of R12 for the system. You will need to have the system checked.

An undercharge also can cause icing, and short-cycling of the compressor. However, if you're certain that the A/C was not selected on the control panel (and that includes the Defog position), then there's a short somewhere causing voltage to be applied to the compressor clutch.
