Default dot to dot = #1 tdc on comp or exhaust stroke?

If the camshaft and the crank gear are dot to dot that means that the #1 piston and the #6 piston are at TDC. Which piston is on the compression stroke. im under the impression that cam and crank gear dot to dot is #6 piston TDC on compression stroke. That would mean that crank gear dot at 12'oclock and cam gear dot at 12'oclock would be
#1 TDC on compression stroke. is this correct?

cam and crank gear dot to dot = #1 TDC exhaust stroke, #6 TDC compression stroke

crank gear and cam gear dots at 12'oclock & 12'oclock= #1 TDC compression stroke, #6 TDC exhaust stroke

Yes?

when i put my l98 together, dot to dot and the cam dowel pin was at the 9:00 position. You could try putting your lifters in and see when the intake and exhaust ones are closed on cylinder 1 to verify the compression stroke.

Actually I do not remember if they were dot to dot or 12 and 12...been a few years.

I think the lifters will tell you the answer.
