My gas gauge does the same on my 92. The range reading is not that accurate. I reset the trip odometer when I fill up and use the average mpg that I have been getting to determine when it is getting low. I get about 20 mpg with mixed driving so I fill up before I have gone 300 miles. This should give me about 5 gallons left in the tank just in case.
It would probably need to be replaced which is pricey unless you can do it yourself. I tried to run Techron through mine to clean it with no positive result.
