The car is a 92 automatic with 66k on it. When I put the car in park after driving it goes into reverse even though the shifter is locked and the indicator is on P. If I shift from OD to neutral it's in neutral, from neutral to reverse it's in reverse, from reverse to park it's in reverse but the reverse lights go out. Any ideas? Linkage?

Very likely but you may want to check the cable attachment bracket where it attaches to the pan, it could be loose and cause the same condition, good luck.

Thank you for the replies! After reading your suggestions and looking at my fsm, it appears that to check the shift cable and attachment bracket I need to remove the center console and few other things and check this from inside the car and not underneath. Is this correct?

No, not correct. Look under the car where the cable bracket attaches to the pan and see if the attachment bolts are loose.
There is a slot in the shift arm on the transmission and the pin that the shifter cable attaches to rides in that slot. A 15mm nut (on the inside) holds the pin in position. Here's your guy (shifter cable disconnected -- it goes under the washer and cotter pin):
Not only was the bracket loose but one bolt was completely missing and the other one was half way out! Here's what I found....
I'm off to go get another bolt and get her tightened up. I think I'll change the fuel filter as long as I got her on the stands, it's been a few years since it's been changed.
