When I put my 92 LT1 away for storage last fall, I noticed that the fuel pump seemed a little louder than I remembered. This spring, the fuel pump again emitted a loud grumble when you turned the key and the car did not want to stay running. The engine would start at first but quickly sputter and die. After several attempts, I was able to keep the car running and drive it home. Once the car starts and warms up, the engine performs normally and the only abnormality is the rather loud fuel pump.
Is a loud fuel pump an indication of a weak or bad fuel pump? Since the car runs and accelerates fine once warmed up, it would seem that the fuel pump is working fine.
It's very likely that it's loud due to strain, or it's simply ready to fly the coop. A friends car had an in tank pump that got quite loud, and He lost a few psi fuel pressure. Not too long after, the pump quit.
Hopefully that is not your case, but it could be. Check the fuel pressure during cranking, see how long it takes to bleed off after stopping the car...and under wot. Wot, it ought to go up and stay up.
