Default A/C questions

What year did the a/c freon change from R-12 to R-134? If low on freon,
does the system need to be evacuated before recharging? Where is the
low pressure valve for refilling located? Is it worth doing myself, or should I head off to a mechanic? HELP! :( :cry

Default Re: A/C questions (Bill94LT1)

I think that the change occurred in 1993. My 1992 had R-12 from the factory, but has since been converted to R-134a.

The system doesn't need to be evacuated as long as there is still pressure in the system.

The low pressure valve is on the dryer, which is that big cylinder right behind the radiator. It has 2 ports, use either one.

You need to clear all codes before the system will re-energize. Do this by disconnecting the battery.

If you have R-134a, go to WalMart, buy a kit and hose, purge hose and attach to system, open valve on hose, allow can to equalize with the system, then start engine and engage compressor while leaving valve on can open. It may take more than one can, charge to recommended level.
