Sometimes new rotors are packages with a goopey film on them to keep them from rusting. Best to remove that stuff. Probably too late now if you've already driven the car.

Yeah, but most of the good local performance rotors have the zinc coating that is rust free so that goop is not necessary. If you see goop on the part, thats a sign the part was in the hold of a ship that made the crossing from China to the States...goop is applied to all metal parts that are exposed to salt water/air...as in shipping.

I agree, they come with a sort of rust preventive coating. Kinda tacky definitely not goopy as mentioned by an earlier poster. Im sure you will be fine. AS mentioned by cuuisinartvette you will know. It might smoke or smell for a bit but it should clear itself up within a few heat cycles.

I forgot to clean 2 of my new rotors on my TBSS a couple of years ago and nothing bad happened, they are just fine. But I have to say I have never seen a rotor caked in grease or a goopy film before.

Some come with a greasy coating
You can remove the brake pads and get some coarse sand paper and scrub the crap of the pads, always a good idea to wipe the coating of the discs paint thinners works great ... oh maybe it just gets me high

as mentioned you'll be fine generally unless you intentionally leave dirt, bearing grease or anything else especially abrasive or designed to prevent friction from occurring- light mineral oil that rotors are typically coated in isn't one of these substances although they're good to remove because it can cause it the pad material that's used to speed up bedding to be used to remove the oil instead of bed the rotors.

light oil and finger-prints are mostly safe to leave on there. They'll be burned off he first few stops.

I paid $180 for these brakes and pads shipped to my door. I know they are cheap in price but got good reviews on the Fbody forums. Im on a budget with this car since its more of a toy and not my daily driver. How long should I break them in for?? Maybe until all the crosshatching on the rotor surface is worn smooth? I am staying way back on people in traffic as of now to break them in slowly. Is this not needed?

Go take a short drive with a few normal stops. Then get it to 40 or 50 and JAM the brakes so hard that the ABS actuates.....you;re good to go. as long as the brakes DO grab enough to wake the ABS,,,if not, THEN ya got a problem.

Assuming that your new pads are semi-metalic, the hotter they get the better they grab, Full metallic need to be very hot before they start to work...full composite work best cold, so semi metallic is the best of both worlds.

Unless of course they are some of those scam aftermarket cheapo pads that were imported that were made of pressed cardboard that came apart the first time someone used the brake hard...
