1986 4+3 Corvette: symptoms...the car is sluggish, it seems to be idling rough, at around 6-7 rpms. That is it seems like it is missing. When I ease on the gas, the car seems to perform fine, except when the car is in overdrive....then it seems to be chug. Also, when I "get on it" the car seems sluggish, like something is holding it back.
I changed out the fuel filter and that seems to not have done anything. I have inspected the distributer cap and button. The cap seems to have some carbon buildup on the contacts, but other than that nothing. Besides, it is only 2 years old. I have changed out all the plug wires and spark plugs. My next step is to run some sea foam through the engine and clean out the throttle housing.
Other than this, I cannot think of anything else except the catalytic converter. By the way, there are no vacuum leaks. ANyone with any thoughts?
since you don;t state milage, age alone says Cats. You ALSO need injectors, a fuel pump & screen and EGR cleaning/decarboning of the passages.
Normal C4 maint.

Smurf: I have an '86 4+3 as well, and had the same problem, no power/sluggish over 2,000 RPM's; replace the normal tune-up stuff, and then realized it was either the pre-cats, or the main catalytic converter, or probably a combination of both; replaced both, and it feels like a new car; got both Magnaflow replacements for $335 shipped to my door; good luck with the repair......
You didn't say if there were any codes. If you don't have a reader one of the local parts stores will check free. If there are codes check 'em out. may be something simple or not

Any muffler shop can run a back pressure test on your cats. The cost is negligible.
Before spending any money on parts and tune-ups that would be the smart place to start.
Next is codes. Fuel mileage. Etc.
I never followed up on this post, however, the problem turned out to be the chip inside the distributor. I replaced the chip, the cap, and the rotor, this solved the problem.
