The dipstick tube is held in place by one engine to bellhousing bolt.
Once you remove the bolt you have to wiggle the tube out of the
transmission.
Not an easy task because of the shape of the tube and the limited
clearance. I did one on a 89 and had to bend the bracket, install
the tube then bend the bracket back into shape using a pry bar.
Use 2.5 ft. of 1/2 drive extensions and a universal at the socket
end will make it easy to remove the bellhousing bolt.
Lube the new seal and install it in the transmission. Then install
the the dipstick tube.
The arrow points to the bolt hole.

Because of the number of times I have removed my tranny (at least 6 times so far this year), my tube no longer has a bracket on it. It's plenty tight just being held by the rubber donut.

The bolt that holds the dipstick is the top bellhousing bolt on the passenger side. I find it quite hard to get to that bolt and the way I usually do it is to lower the transmission and go in over the top of the trans with a long extension. Obviously not practical for you...
I think going in from the top would be the best way. I have done that. I don't know if just removing the distributor cap would be enough to let you get to that bolt. You might have to remove the distributor.
It is very difficult to get the dipstick tube out because the bracket gets hung up on the wiring harness.

It just occurred to me that you don't need to remove the dipstick tube completely. You just need to get it high enough (a couple inches) to remove and replace the seal.
I was working in that area today and I could see the bolt in question. I don't think you could get to that bolt from the top without removing the distributor.

Hey there I took a long look at the area and the only bolt I can get to was at 3:00. It looks like it is for something else as the bracket it holds is a bit different. Does the tranny dipstick bolt share that one or is it up at 2:oo or higher. I cant believe it is not just mounted to the firewall on top. I have wiring covering anything above the 3:00 bolt. I f I could see it I could get it.
