Default Scan tool won't work on 94

My 94 Vette was running a little rough and the engine light came on. When I try to use a scan tool it just says "vehicle is not responding". I tried 2 different scan tool's, under different settings with no luck.I'm getting power to the OBD plug. I did have a shorted out 12V socket and a blown fuse, but both have been fixed/replaced and I still can't get it to work. Any one have a problem like this before? Or have any ideas?

I too have tried to get my 94 scanned at the auto parts store and with an off the shelf scanner. I read somewhere that 1994 was the transition year from OBD I to OBD II and we are kinda lost in the shuffle. Search this forum though, and you will find posts on how to retrieve the codes by jumping across the ports in the OBD connector and counting the check engine light. Something to that effect, anyway.

Good luck and keep us posted as to what you found wrong with your ride.

All Vettes prior to 96 used OBDI communiction protocol, OBDII only scan tools will not access fault codes or data stream. Some scan tools will read both, but if you simply want to read fault codes the paper clip is your friend. See the link to learn how.

Alright! Thanks for the help! I've heard that these cars were the transition years. I disconnected the bat cable and reconnected it to clear the codes and went for a drive tonight. The light never came back on but its still running like crap, so I'm not sure if I'll still be able to get a code out of it now? I should have waited for some advice before diving into it lol.

I have a 94, it's a OBD 1 car but, the plug under the dash is a OBD2 plug. So, set the scanner to OBD1 and use the OBD2 cord....should work at that point.

If your scanner has a 10K switch make sure it's in the 10K position.

No I haven't done the opti, and the car's got 116k miles, so it wouldn't hurt to change it out. Not sure if it's an opti issue though. It has no power and surges when accelerating when the engine is cold, but goes away once its warm. I also noticed today my brakes are making strange noises and there's a rubbing sound when coasting to a stop.. I hate it when your daily driver gives troubles, cant go without it long enough to fix it!

I had my scan tool set to OB1 with the OBDII cord, I also tried the OBDII settings. and I don't believe it has a 10k switch. Its been a crazy weekend and just haven't had a change to try the paperclip method or go further into the car. Hopefully things slow down enough that I can bring the car into the garage to work on it this week!
