Well..I got everything else fixed.and I THINK I got this narrowed down. I know it's a 3amp fuse, but all I had was 5's, so I put a 5 in...and it worked for a few seconds..then it started flickering (the dash) then it went out. My question is, why would it work for a few secodns...then go out? I'm PRETTY sure it's within my mirror light that comes on with the headlights...since i messed with those wires and probably didn't fix one too good. Hopefully. Just strange how it would stay.....then go.
Re: Interesting problem with INST fuse... (TIMSPEED)
You apparently have enough resistance to ground (not zero ohms) to only draw enough current to take a moment to melt the fuse metal in the 5A fuse, so your lights stay on for a short period before the fuse opens up and all your lights go back off.
Re: Interesting problem with INST fuse... (TIMSPEED)
Remove the inst fuse. The inst fuse clip closest to the front of the car goes to all of the light bulbs and my 87 measures 3 ohms to ground. The forward inst fuse clip goes to the 4 lamps in the cluster, and to the gear lever light (if auto), and to the wiper washer lamp, and to the telltale lights, and to the map light (in the rear view mirror), and to the radio dial light, and to heater/a/c control lamp (if manual) , and to the heater a/c programmer ( if electronic).
Since you admit to working on the map light, I would check there first. You probably pinched a wire thus shorting it to ground when you put the mirror back together. If the mirror connections are ok, then you have 5 other places to find the short.
