Default Dana 44 gears

This might be a dumb question but will any Dana 44 ring and pinion fit in the Corvette carrier? Or do the Corvettes take a special ring and pinion? Need to know what will fit my '87. I know the deep gears won't fit. I am looking for 3:54s or something in that range.

a 4+3 comes with the D44 already, and you dont need 3.54s for a stock L98 engine, 3.07 is perfect

If you have an A4, a D44 will fit in there, but there are other things youll need to buy i think.

Yeah, I have the 4+3 with the Dana 44 but I was thinking of going with a lower gear. I want my car to be quicker. Are the lower gears going to give me the most bang for my buck? Or will I be ruinig a good combo (stock)?

What gear set is in the car now? Have you done any mods to the engine? What mods do you plan on doing in the future? You'll get alot of responses to this thread, alot of controversy on this mod. . . . . . . :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:

Stock gears, 52mm TPIS throttle body, cut lid, high flow cat and mufflers (mufflers are unknown origin but look like flowmasters). Otherwise, it is stock.

I've had musclecars before (but never a Corvette) and know what gears will do for performance. I am hoping a set of gears will do the same in my Corvette. I see a lot of gears on ebay and such but don't know what fits the Corvette. Does anyone know what fits??

Never mind. Answered my own question– jegs.com lists all the specs.

I'm open to all opinions. Thanks edsalinas.

Until you change the intake (miniram, superram, etc.) and/or dig into the motor (like 383, 396 conversion) you DO NOT need a lower gear in the L98.

You have 3.07s, its the perfect gear for L98s. You go lower and youll get out of your powerband way to fast. Anything you gain in the 1/8mi youll lose in the next 1/8mi and its very possible that a 1/4mi time will drop.

You're welcome, don't know that I helped much, probably added to the confusion ! ! ! I guess it all depends on what you what to accomplish.
Daily driver with a bunch of R's off the line ? (Not too concerned with freeway drivin') . . . . A dragster at the 1/4 mile ? . . . . An autocrosser with "Umph"???? It's all relivent. That's what you need to decide, for yourself . . . . . . . I went with a Dana gear set (always the best choice) that allowed me a good punch off the line, but didn't prevent me from long distance freeway driving. After all,we're talking about my DAILY DRIVER. 3.59 put me there, I could have gone deeper, but I had all the right part numbers for the speedo-gear (automatic) and speed sender, etc, etc...... As I've said on this forum several times, get all the input you can from people in the KNOW, then decide what is best for you . . . . . . . . . .

P.S. as someone pointed out to me, the gear set I put in my '92 is 3.54, not 3.59. I humbly appologize

The Corvette D44 requires special gears that are not the same as the standard D44 rear end gears. The difference is in the pinion bearing (I think its the smaller one). The vette D44 one has a larger inner diameter. Its possible to have a sleeve welded to the pinion gear but its not really a recommended setup and not really necessary. You can get 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, Viper 4.10, and 4.11 gears made for the D44. They all run around 200 a set except for the viper 4.10 which is 150 more. Toms Differentials have a custom 4.11 that is quiet and strong for 200.

You can get 3.55s from almost any drive train vendor.
