Don't know how to identify but, the 85 fuel pump is a popular upgrade to the Cross-Fire engine.

There should be ID information on the pump that would ID it from who ever the vendor was. They are NOT the same but the visually they could be identical.

Do you know that the one is an '85? If you do then don't NOT use it.

You need a pump for a TBI.

Really? I don't maybe doubt that but I don't recall ever seeing that before. Interesting. Do you know why? There should have been no need for the increased pressure. In a CFI with engine mods - maybe? I see a couple threads mentioning that they did it but with no explicit rationale as to why. I don't know what the increased pressure accomplishes, the CFI might actually do more volume. If I had my choices for a "stock" car I don't know that there could be a good argument for me to use anything other than the correct one.

The TBI pump I would think less expensive.

Short story,
I got this car from an action, car is non running. the Previous owner started to convert it from tbi to tpi. (I know I know, save your breath) anyway he’s bought wire harness, computer, tpi manifold, rails and all the goods. Its just not put together.
He’s pulled some of the fuel tank apart. Leading me to wonder if he put in a 85 fuel pump in it already.
I know the 84 won’t run the tpi system but the 85 pump will right?
Thats why I'm trying to find markings.
don't know if this helps but the yellow tag on mine reads "YED"

The YED would be an identifier for the entire tank unit but I don't see it referenced. Is the build sheet still attached to the fuel tank? The fuel tank meter would be identified on the build sheet. From a post earlier today block 50 on the build sheet should be the identifier.

Now I guess that time maybe isn't of the essence you just need to find someone with an '85 to ID either his label on the tank unit or has a build sheet.

I just had a somewhat similar problem with my 90 L98. I pulled the pump but the only thing I found on the pump was a series of numbers. I did a web search "fuel pump xxxxxx" and it hit with an Airtex number.

On the updated pump, as long as the new pump put our more pressure than your regulator needed, I'd guess the excess capacity would not be a problem.
