How far is the pinion gear suppose to go into the flexplate ..
This is unrelated to my other starter question, but how far should the starter gear go into the flexplate or flywheel gear.. Mine is only going about half the way into the flexplate and I alway thought it should go in farther.. Thanks WW

It may be related, if the starter needs to be shimmed it is too high up causing the gear to hang up as it is going into the flexplate/flywheel. Just put in one shim & see what it does for you.

Whose starter? Some of the after-market, PowerMaster for sure have the capability to be shimmed two directions. If your present starter has an aluminum block that bolts to the block the pinion can be shimmed towards the rear.

I read your other thread and it could be related. The solenoid is what engages the starter gear to the flex plate. It also has a set of contacts inside it that when extended makes an electrical connection sending current to the motor part of the starter.
If the solenoid isn't making its full travel (for what ever reason) it may not be making the electrical connection between the starter motor and battery.
Here's a picture that may explain it better.
And yes, it should go farther than half way. HTH's
