I think it may be the clutch plate and or bearing. Anyone have any ideas how to check it and are the replacement parts hard to do yourself.

Sounds like the compressor is seized.
Take off the serpentine belt and try to turn the compressor by hand.

Very simple to determine what the problem is : does it squeal all the time or only when you turn the AC on ?
For
most people the solution will be the same : take to garage and have compressor replaced and system recharged.
Mechanically competent person
may luck in and not have to replace entire compressor assy.

it depends on the year on what parts you can get. I had a hard time finding a clutch for my 88. It has been awhile but I do not think I found one and went with a complete compressor. And I have a lot of resources. I also belive the compressor was higher then most

The ones I worked on I could replace the clutch bearing.

That is possible if the rest of the clutch is not trashed.
