Default 1987 Callaway upgrades

Guys,

just purchased a 1987 TT Callaway.

Research on the net is a bit light on and/or confusing with regards as to what upgrades you can do to a 1987.

For example I'm not sure the 100+ manifold can even be used for the '87?

I'd be interested in peoples experiences/opinions as to where to start, starting from minor simple mods to wholesale replacement of the entire system.

EG:
Can you increase boost pressure to provide small improvement?
100+ modification?
cam upgrade?
turbo swap?
etc

Thanks for the help.

I think there was something called a "wonder bar" that was a decent upgrade for these cars. Other than that, find someone that has messed with them before and figure out how much you can up the boost.

Default Callaway upgrades

a 100+ will work on an 87 but the turbos will have to be changed and finding a 100+ manifold is next to impossible to find as Callaway has none in stock

Default MAF Sensor

Back in the day there was no software available as there is today (TunerPro & TunerCat). Therefore the Microfueler etc.

Today put in a new style slot MAF sensor calibrated for 600 RWHP and 63 pound injectors and a new tune for same.

Idea is to keep what I say in mind after you make any or all updates you plan from manifolds to turbos.

i am curious about Callaways also. They apparently use a stock GM ECM with a custom tune and a microfueler as you guys have laid out.

i understand Moates has a programmer + wideband option for the 89 computer... is that a good option?

i actually have a BigStuff3 i have not used that i could play with, it could probably replace BOTH, but I would not want to cut up the harness.

bottom line, that 89 callaway MAF is tiny, and obviously restrictive. the TPI is incredibly restrictive. even those callaway exhaust manifolds are pretty small.

i'd love to see what the 89 would do with 12.5 boost, the wonderbar, bigger throttle body and larger air intake without the MAF, having an actual perfect tune, and going with a really good larger turbo to rear exhaust.

I was aware they used a stock GM ECM, but didn't know they used a custom tune...

Is the micro fueller a "standalone" ECM that just drives the additional injectors?

Yes, in short.

Thanks Chris, was the GM ECM a std tune or modified by Callaway?

I am trying to find out what injectors are in the 89 tt. Are they stock 24lb? And what are the ramshorn injectors?

Any help is much appreciated. The 89 is popping and laying down at wot, but seems to run ok at idle or part throttle.

The stock injectors, which were the original TPI injectors should be checked for failure - that's step #1 of any drivability concern, thanks to "modern" fuels

If the ECM is bad, can you swap the PROM chip into another std ECM?

Yes you can move the Callaway MemCal Pack from one ECM to another. The Callaway ECM is the same one as any year back then.

The PROM (e-prom inside the blue MemCal) had limited edits as none of us had access to software. Callaway and I discussed. The right way to fix what you have is go with MIN 42 pound injectors and a new tune (TunerPro or TunerCat). Then disconnect the MicroFueler which was a band aid. It's ALWAYS better to put the fuel in directly and not turn a dry manifold into a wet one !

Finally replace the Bosch hot wire MAF with one of my slot style. The Bosch was calibrated for no more than 250HP where-as my standard slot is good thru 600 HP. The 3" sensor housing has very little pressure drop and will not restrict you.

Best regards,
greg

Depending on the amount of power you're looking to make and the $$$ would dictate this. Time and tech march on, but sometimes melding the two might yield the best outcome.

I know a guy making 700+rwhp with the rams horn injectors. If I recall correctly he said drivability was much better on the smaller primaries with supplementals vs 8 big injectors.

Going with a modern AIC is must in my opinion.

Come to the Callaway forum we have a thread going on about this right now.

There is a recipe for 420-440rwhp and 570rwtq...it is so repeatable its becoming the standard for guys that drive their CTTCs.

Big Wonderbar
~14psi/58"hg
Big dual Exhaust- one owner just installed al LT1/4 Corsa and LOVES it.
Tune
Dump microfueler for a modern controller.

Don't mess with the large tube runner IMO. They don't fit right and one runner has to be dented to clear the intercooler. Total pain to install as well.

An aftermarket TB won't fit, however the stock one can be bored to 52mm.
