I just finished installing a Megashifter in my '85 so I thought I would post the pics as a help for others who may do the same. Once I got it done I realized I should have mounted the shifter about 1/8 to 1/4 inch further to the right for clearance but I was able to remove a small amount from the console subframe to rectify a tight spot. I also had to remove a small amount from the shifter plate for clearance in the same area. I started by locating the shifter as close to the stock position as I could, I found I could use one of the existing holes in the right front to give me a starting point. I found that I could use the original rear holes also if I added some to the base of the megashifter. I'll cover that in a minute. I did not use the base pieces B&M supplies because it would have added an inch to the height of the shifter. The shifter was made for the Camaro/Firebird console. I saw that if I cut the rear area off the stock shifter where the mounting holes were I could also use the original rear mounting holes & bolts. I marked it off and cut it off then welded it to the megashifter. B&M supplies the relay needed to adapt the stock wiring to the B&M wiring. I routed the wires as shown in the picture. Once this was all done it was just a matter of finishing up the console re-assembly. Take a look at the last picture, see anything wrong? I had to reverse the gear selector plate because the shifter mechanism was contacting the selector and light assembly. I hope this helps someone and if I can give any assistance just ask.
Showing the location of the front bolt hole
This shows how much too short the B&M was
The green line is where I cut the mounting area off the stock shifter.
This shows it welded in and bolted down
I mounted the relay down in the open area below the shifter and ran the wires from it to the original wiring.
This shows the tight spot on the right side.
I had to trim some off the subframe, you can tell what I removed by looking at your subframe
I had to mount the indicator just the ooposite of the way it is supposed to be but I can live with it.
Nice work on re-using the piece off the stock shifter for the rear mount. I've been wanting a better than stock shifter for mine and this looks like a good candidate. Too bad about the shift position indicator though.
Thanks for the pics and the write up! Do you have part numbers for the shifter and boot by chance? Ive been looking for something like this for a while.
Is yours real stiff shifting manualy? I put one in my old iroc and allways thought something was wrong. It worked fine but seemed to take more efford then i thought it should to manualy shift it
Nice job and good idea adding to the shifter so you could use the stock holes. I keep forgetting all the possibilities owning a welder opens up and glad I bought one last year. I found a similar guide for my C3 and fabed a bracket to add an aftermakert shifter and have looked some and been keeping an eye out for something for my c4. Now that I've seen this I'm thinking maybe just buy a shifter I like and cut n weld a base to use it with the stock plate like I did on my C3 if I can.

It is number 80692 and the boot and everything else you need is included.

Thanks for asking, yes mine is a bit stiff and I was going to climb back under it tomorrow to see if I could re-position the cable. I really felt the cable was in the ideal position so apparently it is just the new shifter that is tight. I did quite a bit of running it back & forth and it seems to be loosening up just fine. Now that I know you had the same thing I don't have to drag out the jacks & jackstands, yay.

If you position the shifter about 1/4 inch to the right of where mine is you can keep the indicator as it should be. I don't look at the indicator much anyway so I'm leaving well enough alone. It would be too much trouble to move it now.
I thought it would wear in some too but if anything it got stiffer with use. I only had it about a year then sold the car but sold it to a buddy. He says it hasnt changed in years so it didnt get much stiffer anyway.

Love the look! Damn, another mod about to take place for my 89.
Thanks, glad you like it. I really like the look too, it is much better than the stock shifter. One thing I forgot to mention, when you are removing the mirror selector switch, do it carefully, they apparently come apart easily. I had internals flying all over and I never did find one of the springs. That's why the hole is open in the pics, I'm waiting for a new switch. Another bit of rotten luck, my seat control switch has always been less than perfect but I decided to go ahead and put it back in since the seat never gets moved anyway. During the whole process I had moved the seat around many times and I did a final adjustment on the seat before I buttoned everything up and it was fine. Then after I was completely done I got in the car and did a few more slight adjustments to the position. Just as I was about done I moved the seat forward a ways and then I went to move it back again, that's when that damn switch died. I had to pull the seat bottom out and jumper the wires to move the seat back again. I've ordered another switch but it is going to be quite a job to replace since GM did not put the connectors near the switch, they run the wires down along the side of the trans tunnel under the carpet then through the carpet under the seat. I will definitely have to at least remove the seat to replace that stupid switch.
Maybe, But your steering wheel is still on the wrong side.....I would be dead in 10 minites driving in your country........WW
I can remember driving in Los Angeles turning right onto a main road, went into automatic mode and drove onto wrong side of the road, 3 lanes of traffic heading towards us, I quickly turned up a nearby driveway into what i thought was a carpark, there were those dreaded spikes across it, pulled to the right and drove along the footpath as all the drivers on the road were going past staring at me !!
Since I am going to have the pleasure of replacing the seat switch I am also going to see about getting the indicator back where it should be. I was just wanting to get the install done and I took the easy way out so now I will go back in & see how I can straighten out my problem. I rarely even look at the indicator so it is going to be a considerable amount of work just for cosmetics but it has to be corrected.
Looks great! But I have a question. Are all C4 four speed auto trans the same? Even when I hold my shifter in first gear it shifts up. THen when the RPMs fall it shifts down. Can't see how having a notch is any different than holding the stick. Do I have an orphan tranny?

No.. They are not. Up till about 93 (I think? I know it was for other vehicles.) The trans was the 700R4/4L60 Hydraulic unit.
Those you tune with a shift kit, and you can strip out the hydraulic protection if you want.. So it won't shift up.
From 93 up, it was the 4L60E. The "E" stands for "Electronic" and those you can tune the shift points on with a tuner and the ECM.
I am in the process of putting a Hurst his and hers dual gate II in my 1987 C4 console. I bought one that is for a camaro with a 700r4 transmission... It does not look to be to difficult to accomplish. Thanks, gary
