vortec heads vs aluminum Gen 1 heads
I have a set of vortec heads with the cast number 10239906 which means I get 20% less exhaust flow would I be better off using these head or trying to get a set aluminum heads. I'm ordering a XR270HR cam and springs so what would be my best bet

not all 906 vortecs flow bad on the exhaust.
Take a carbide bit on a die grinder and open up an exhaust seat, if it makes a dark orange spark it has the more restrictive exhaust seats. Not all 906's had them.
Even if you have the hard seats a machine shop can open them up or machine them out and install regular seats.

This will answer some of the questions, not all. Beware of high lift cams with Vortec heads.

From the super chevy article....
It says SOME 3/4 and one ton trucks. Not all 906's have poor exhaust flow.
For you junkyard hunters, be forewarned that some ¾- and 1-ton trucks came with Vortec heads equipped with a specially hardened exhaust seat that kills low- and mid-lift flow. Casting number 10239906 should be avoided.

Have them magnafluxed before you put any money into them
Gotten those to flow fairly well takes a little work in the right places.
Real nice combustion chamber they need a little less timing in them, do you have an intake thats compatible wiht the vortec bolt angle?
