Default A few problems I Need help on.

First off, I have a 1989 corvette and sadly here are my problems listed below.

1. My door hinge broke and now the door will not stay open. it opens and close fine and swing in and out with no problem. Just a little metal rod in the shape of what i believe was an s decided to snap. So now my door wont stay open and closes immediately after opening. Where can I find the part and how hard it is to replace.

2. With the key in the on position, but the car is not running I hear what sounds like a motor constantly spinning on the passenger side. I also noticed at the same time that I lost the heat when a friend tried to turn it on.

3. I have oil coming out of my dipstick tube which is causing a lovely smell and smoking. Also, at the same time if I open the dipstick then smoke pours out of it and the same thing happens on the oil fill cap. If i take off the oil fill cap it smoke like crazy also. Pictures below of the oil,

Video of smoke from oil cap. Also is that a lifter making the clicking noise?

This shows oil on the dipstick and also oil that has burned onto the exhaust heat shield.

Another shot of the oil.

Any help with any of my problems is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Stephen

This door hinge spring is available thru Corvette Central, 800-345-4122, p/n: 284056.

Is your a/c-vent-heater fan turned on?

Sounds like it might be time for a new PCV valve.

I have heard that there is a special tool to replace the spring, but many people manage to get it on without the tool.

That's the HVAC blower motor. Turn off the HVAC system and it will stop.

Roy sneaked in there while I was researching... Check the PCV valve as he advised.

I found clicked the link to the door spring and that is one problem down once it arrives. Also gonna order 21 and keep one as a back up for when the other door dies.

The second problem being the motor running sound. yes, the HVAC is turned off. I am figuring it is a blend door or something due to not getting heat in the car but I will check the heat operation again.

Third problem and probably the most complicated is I checked the PCV valve and it is working to my understanding. I can always replace with another since they are cheap and try that. But at the same time, the hose for the PCV valve is quite dirty. I blew it out with compressed air and got out a bunch of crap but that did not help the problem.

Thanks for all the help, it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Stephen

If you have the C68 digital HVAC system the motor will run continuously if the blower motor control module is bad or this fuse is open:

If you have the C60 manual HVAC system then the high speed relay could be bad. It is mounted on the same bracket as the C68 fan speed monitoring fuse:

You could try unplugging the blower motor (connector just below the brace in the second picture). You should be able to hear the blower motor running if you open the hood if that is indeed the source of the sound.

Check for hot heater core hoses. They should both be hot. You might have a plugged heater core. Later cars have a restrictor in one of the heater hoses that sometimes gets plugged up.

If that checks out we can go into blend door troubleshooting...

I have the c68, I can change the fan setting and it will blow harder or lesser depending on setting obviously. But I still hear that motor sound and no I do not hear it when I am in the engine bay. Still no heat and the heater core hoses are both hot.

So I am guessing it is a blend door problem?

Also, I cleaned out the PCV valve and the hose for them and it is still smoking like in the video and maybe even worse now.

Thanks, Stephen

You can check the fan speed on the HVAC control head by pressing the fan speed AUTO button. That will temporarily switch the display to fan speed from zero to 10. In automatic mode it will never go below 4. The fan speed is determined by the difference between the inside cabin temperature and the temperature that you request by setting with the COOL and WARM buttons. You can turn off the fan by pressing the OFF button.

To check the blend door you need to remove the blower motor controller mounted on top of the evaporator housing in the engine compartment. Then set the temperature to 60° and 90°. The blend door should move to block (60° position) or not block (90° position) the heater core. That looks like this (60° position first, followed by the 90° position):

Hate to say it but smoke from your oil cap and oil upchucking from the dip stick also means excessive blow by on the pistons. You can check your PCV and also the CCV system and the passageways at the TB and manifold making sure they are clear. You are building pressure that should not be there. Either your engine isnt "breathing" properly or you have blow by.
