Been having a problem with my 86 just dying at red light every now and then but it will start right back up. And sometimes when I turn the ignition on the main cooling fan will be on. I changed my ECM. Did not fix the problem now a few weeks later I have the ECM the floorboard hooked up while my car is idling I can give the ECM a little smack and the car dies. ECM was under warranty so swapped it out and it does the same thing. I have a custom tune from pcmforless. So any ideas I wouldn't think 2 ECM would have the same problem
Most likely a connector problem. I'd make sure all the pins look good and use some contact cleaner on them. Also ohm out the grounds to make sure they're good.
I went through the same thing recently with my 91.
Started with losing MPH readout...code 41, comm error.
Sometimes key on, no CEL, fans on. Do it again, CEL and no fans, starts fine.
I had a reman ECM from cardone. Junk from the start. Dealt with it 8 months until it finally would not communicate. Bought an AC Delco reman (prob reman'd by Cardone) and all has been well.
I was blaming my prom, moates adapter, etc but that was all fine.
Try another ECM. CCM is the master device and ECM is slave. CCMs rarely go bad.
Use dielectric grease on connections, look for insulation shrinking, etc.
No stored codes. I used electric grease yesterday when I installed the new one. I tried wiggling wires at connection no affect. Only tapping it slightly makes it die.
