Default Replacing distributor cap on L98 - new cap has "heavy duty spring locks" ...

... which don't seem to work for this application. The old cap fastened with traditional screws. Do I need to take the MSD cap back and get something else, or is there a way to make these things fasten?

the three (3) L98 corvettes I've owned have or had four (4) screws holding down the distributor cap. to answer your question on taking the cap back, I'd say yes. btw, the only cap (and rotor) i use is accel #8131 -

I believe an MSD 84115 is correct for the "coil in cap" that requires screws.

Someone months ago mentioned using what you have but I believe I'd just exchange or return. A "local buy" I hope?

That is the p/n for the MSD "Extreme" cap. Summit wants $46 for it

I got a Taylor cap and rotor (TAY-918131) for the '87 that was all of $21 and change. It's thick material and uses brass contacts for both the cap and rotor.

Not all the L98 distributors use the spring-loaded clip style. Some catalogs don't show the two different attaching types.

OP has already purchased an MSD product - will the reseller only offer an exchange? I only matched his "brand choice" I paid no attention to price and NO I wouldn't pay it either.

I didn't look at Summit either just the MSD branding and the correct attaching method.

Bought the MSD from a local Autozone. They didn't have the one with the correct fasteners, so I exchanged it for a Duralast with brass contacts and heavy plastic construction for the same price.

Thanks, folks.

The caps with the L-shaped spring loaded latches were only used in 1984.

not saying it's not true, but I've never seen a L98 corvette with the spring loaded "L" clips (not that I've see THAT many). although...

...since the 84 was a L83 engine, that would explain everything! catalogs are not the smartest things in the world either - if some catalogs do, and some don't, that would lead me to question the information.

Last distributor cap I bought about a year ago came same way, instead of taking it back I just cut off the ends on the metal rods and used the old bolts from the old distro cap, still working today.....

Best of Luck.....

Oh yea, why didn't I just take it back? No patients they would have needed to order 1 and I didn't want to wait, I wanted to roll so I just fixed the problem myself.... Besides the cap is red......8-)
