I'M IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE STOCK EXAUST W/FLOWMASTERS. I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE BEST WAY TO GO WITH THE CAT? I WOULD EVEN CONSIDER GOING WITH-OUT A CAT IF THERE'S REAL GAINS IN PERFORMANCE. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS. THE CURRENT CAT. IS PRETTY WELL RUSTED OUT. 1984, RECENT REBUILD, 10.5/1 COMP. ,1969 PORTED HEADS & MILD PERFORMANCE CAM.
I installed a Random Technology convertor 3 years ago on my '85. They claim their convertor has less restriction than a replacement pipe or a gutted convertor. It's in front of a 2.5" Borla y pipe and mufflers. The system sounds great and the car has sailed thru 2 emissions tests. In fact, the last time we took it in for testing they made us run it thru again. It was so clean they thought there was something wrong with their equipment.
If Findley, OH requires the dreaded E-Check you will need a cat.
I got a Random Tech. hi-flow cat from TPIS for about $225 and my '88 easily passed the E-Check in Summit Co in June even with my mods which includes no pre-cats.
SO FAR IT'S UNANIMOUS, RANDOM TECH, SEEMS TO BE THE BEST. WHERE CAN I GET ONE & HOW MUCH? THANKS ALOT FOR THE INPUT!
Add another vote for the Random Tech, as well as another "It'll pass E-Check" vote from me too. You can get them from TPIS among many other places. You may be able to even order directly from Random. http://www.tpis.com is the website for TPIS.
