Default 86 Drastic Steering Pull When Brakes Applied

Hello,

When you touch the brakes, its been pulling to the left hard enough that you have to fight with it to stay straight since I bought it. Mechanic swore it was calipers and lines, so replaced both. I re-bled all lines (furthest to closest) after a few weeks of it continuing. I changed the brake pads too on both front wheels. Master cylinder is topped off as well.

Im out of ideas and dont want to keep throwing parts at it that arent the problem.

Very interested for some insight, Thanks!

maybe your rubber lines are swelled up restricting fluid?

oops sorry did not see you did that hmm

did you trace the lines back and look for kinks or dents?

the pins that the caliper slides on.
and the steel lines that go to the master cylinder.

The caliper guide pins have to be greased in order for the calipers to slide. New calipers should have come with a small packet of grease. The pins are held in place by the rubber seals and attach to the caliper bracket with the two small bolts you loosened to remove the caliper from the bracket.

I would suggest getting a new set of guide pins, seals and bolts. These are pretty common on most GM cars from the 80's on up thru the C5 brakes. They aren't expensive and some parts stores will even carry kits made by the aftermarket if not AC Delco parts.

Had the same thing happen to me and it ended up being the abs pump. After driving feel the front wheels and see if one is getting hotter than the other. If it is take that wheel off and release the pressure with the bleed screw and that wheel should spin freely again. If that wheel continues to get hot after this, your abs pump is keeping pressure on that line even when no brake is applied.

So did you just replace the abs pump? Or rebuild/clean?

I removed the pump and the module and I have no light on. When this happened it was 400 to 600$ for a new or rebuilt one. You can look for a used one on the forum for cheaper, but I have not seen them come up very often.

Hmm would a good way to this be to unplug the relay/solenoid?

Just did some quick research into the abs system... ive never heard mine actually work. Thinking i may actually have a bad component in the system, possibly causing unwanted braking.

Ill take a test light to the relays and ill grease the pins on the calipers and try not to turn left when I want to stop

Thanks for the help!

If everything else checks out I agree with the ABS pump. Mine was holding pressure on the front driver side. Bought a used one off ebay and that fixed the problem. Yorkfitter do you have any pics of your pump elimination? If it happens again I'm gonna eliminate it.

It has been awhile since I removed the ABS. Since it is a Bosch the lines going in were metric. I ended up cutting the lines for the front and re flaring them for a standard SAE flare and buying a tee to from my local car parts suppliers. I also changed the rear to SAE with a coupling. It is not pretty and hard to do in that small of a space. I have been meaning to redo it under the car but have not found time or motivation.

I had a car that did that. Wound up being a bad belt in one of the tires. Rotate front to back cleared up my problem for the most part

check with Pat (See4Parts) as he disassembles quite a few C4's apparently. He's had the ABS pumps before at reasonable prices.

I looked at one time for places that repaired or rebuilt those ABS units in the past and did not find anyone fixing them at this time.
