can i just put my 96 motor into that car?
will i have to make any wiring changes and if so can i just remove them off my 96 or will i havr to change computers

The 86 is a OBDI wiring system and a GEN1 L98 motor, the 96 is the OBDII wiring system and a GEN2 LT1/4 series motor with reverse flow cooling, its going to be a wiring nightmare. Get the FSM for both. If you have a ton of patience and some electrical wiring skills, anything is possible.

Sorry to hear this!!! Hopefully no damage to you!! just lil love for the car. NOT without alot of swapping from your now donor car. you would need LT1/4 to SBC motor mount bracket conversion OR the MM frame tubes removed from the L98 & install the LT1/4 MM frame tubes. Wiring would lots of fun!! I'm sure insured. Purchase the car back. for the few Hundred dollars. part it out. your motor ZF? Dana 44?? will bring in plenty$$. interior $$ anything left on the exterior$$

It won't be plug and play. lt1 used different "K" member and front suspension than an 86 If you still have the 96 save it until the 86 is straight. 88-91 would be better and a 92+ would be a best when looking for donor / or shell to use for rebuild. Just trying to minimize areas of head ache. You may end up transferring most of the electronics and doing fab work dealing with "K" member. There were a lot of changes over 11 years. If its going to be a track car reprogramming to deal with missing modules, a little fab work and a gauge style dash maybe all you need.

As you are probably aware - the 1996 is a Gen II Small Block - where the 86 is a Gen I Small Block. So - even if you took all the electronic fuel injection stuff off the 1986 car - it won't bolt onto the 1996 engine. Trying to make the 1996 electronic work with the 1986 car is going to cause you massive headaches - the EFI systems are massively different, as are the engines air and fuel flow capabilities.
If you live in a state where emissions testing isn't required - you could buy an intake manifold for the 1996 that accepts a conventional carb, and distributor, put a special fuel pressure regulator on the car that is meant to take the higher pressure output and reduce it down to a level that is carb compatible, and do a carb & conventional distributor set-up on the gen II motor. That will at least solve the wiring problems.... Then you're just left with some relatively minor issues relating to bolting the motor / trans in place... While some will say it's a step backwards - you will have a running car - and while drivability is probably better with EFI - a properly tuned carb can make as much HP as a EFI motor can.
GOOD LUCK !

Sell the '96 for parts and buy another whole car. This is a nightmare waiting to happen.

If it were ME: I'd run the '96 motor off the '86 ECM and harness, using a regular style distributor (after doing the intake mod to make a regular distributor fit). Fastest, easiest way to get it running, IMO.
