Default L98 sump gasket removal

Hi guys
I have a 1988 c4, with the standard l98,
My question is, do you have to remove the engine to replace the sump gasket,

It goes between your oil pan an your engine, stops the oil leaking out

Many have removed the oil pan w/o pulling the engine, I plan to myself shorty to change oil pans. One of the nice things bout corvettes, even on my c3 I have done it.

FYI "oil pan gasket" is the preferred term.

edit: You may have to turn the crank so the front weight is out of the way to get the pan off.

Ok got it. Yeah had never heard that one before.

It seems like the worst thing you might have to do is unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine up, but even that's probably not necessary.

Do you just have to wriggle the **** out of it to get it out, sounds like a whole lot of fun

Mine came right out without any problems. Later I found that the crank was on TDC, so try that before you take it out.

- pretty sure that's the key. dropped my 85's oil pan without any additional effort. to the OP - I recommend a fel-pro, blue silicone rubber, one piece gasket. replaced mine about 8 years ago - still bone dry.

Sometimes you have to turn the engine to get the crank out of the way. I never had to on my 84 though. I do remember moving the starter out of the way & removing the frame braces that triangulate the cross member.

I've got one of those blue one piece gaskets, going to do the valve covers as well, I'm guessing I will have to take the engine apart just to replace the gaskets for them as well.
