You need to decide what serie of engine you want a Gen I commonly called SBC. Which is going to look like what you have and is straight bolt in as long as it's a 86 or newer block. The LS or Gen III is going to take more parts, work, and money to do. The SBC to LS swap is becoming more common, but it's far from a straight bolt in. You shouldn't need a special oil pan either way.

Any size gen 1 SBC should fit. I am currently doing a engine swap in my 1988 Corvette and I considered an LS3,
but the cost to convert everything over was to high since you need new front accessories, motor mount adapters, engine computer (ECU), headers, ect ect.
A good rule of thumb is take the cost of the LS engine and double it. That is the cost for converting your car to use an LSX engine and is not including labor if a shop is doing it.
The most you should have to do is buy a 383 long or short block and reuse everything else(intake, oil pan, accessories).
