The C4 (whether 4+3 or 6-speed) uses a torque beam to solidly connect the trans to the rear axle. It attaches to a special tailhousing on the trans.
You could possibly make up an adapter to mount that BW Super T-10, but it would take some steel stock, plus a bunch of heating, welding, drilling, etc .... Plus the driveshaft might need shortening or lengthening; may need a different yoke...
Unless you're into fabrication, give it a pass...

The 4 speed of the 4+3 is the tranny listed (ST10), so nothing would be gained by swapping it out. If you were looking to swap it out because of a dead OD, just live with a dead OD (I drove mine for many miles with a burned out OD unit).
As stated, the problem will be mounting it to the rear end with the beam...

The rest should work...Might be different ratios, though...

How's the fluid look? Dod you drain it into a nice clean bottle (Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts makes a good container) and look at it close? Brass particles or silver?
Did anyone work on the overdrive while the main part of the trans was still in the car? (Reverse idler thrust washer can fall out).
Msockwell@aol.com had a 4+3 w/blown OD for sale last week...He said the trans section was good...
Unless you've deliberately abused it, it's hard to blow reverse...

I think Rich's problem in having no reverse is in the o/d's inability to drive in reverse without valve body pressure. If it just went out slowly I would pull the o/d pan and change the filter and try again. If it went out with a bang I wish you luck...

So, if you have no pressure in the OD, you have no reverse??? Interesting; I don't think I've read that anywhere...
Why is that, do you know???

About no reverse....I am only relating what I have heard about the o/d. However, I do know that the first sign of an o/d pressure failure is that the unit slips when reversing. Mine did it and I changed the oil and filter and the problem went away. As I understand the o/d uses one-way lock-up in direct forward, but depends on clutch pressure in the o/d to reverse. There are a couple of sites in the archives that lead you to better explanations on how it works. Send a note to Scorp, he found the site.

Gee so many responses to a message looking for a "tranny guy." I never realized there were so many of your type on the forum. And Scorp, we're all just really surprised... :bb
Dammit somebody better get my joke this time.

I would contact David-F about an overdrive rebuild. He is THE MAN when it comes to these things. I can't find his email address at the moment. He is based I think out of Georgia and is very fair.

My 85 4+3 always seem to have problems. So I switch it w/ a 700r auto. was real simple. The only thing is, I miss my 4+3, even with all the problems. The car doesn't seem half as fast any more. I guess I'll save up and put a after market 6 speed that bolts right in. ;)
