I'd put a bottle of Lucas transmission lube in before I'd start pulling it out. It's cheap, and can't hurt anything if it isn't able to stop the noise.
As cadmaniac says, it may buy you more time, but I don't think magic in a bottle is going to cure your problem. You describe leaking, "screeching" sound and hard shifting. The hard shift could be caused by many things - high line pressure, broken 1-2 accumulator etc. Screeching noise COULD be a band that has lost part/all of its lining. COULD be a rear roller clutch, as this begins to turn in 2nd. gear. Make sure TV cable is adjusted properly. Probably need to drop the pan and look for anything that shouldn't be there. Having the pressures checked as per the chart is probably in order.
