Viking, how miles did you put on the car? I'm jealous that you took the car again for another spin. Mine is still on jack stands.
I am really impressed on how far you have brought your car, from near death to almost show car level.
Next time you get time, we should do a chat. Would be nice to talk to a fellow C4 owner. I will bring the beer.
Dmittz, wow your car is very impressive, glad you found time to show me your car. Thanks again buddy

update parking brake and bilsteins
its funny i bought the bilsteins as an afterthought not really thinking i needed them. OMG did i need them.
im looking fwd to driving in the morning!
the fronts wouldnt expand lol. and i note there is a large difference in the diameter on the body. for the tear.
and the fronts wouldnt expand either. haha.
i wonder how many c4's are driving around with pos struts. probably tens of thousand.

in reference to the shock install on the 84-87 with the bilstein HD (the z52 version (my car is base) as opposed to the z51 version) Id like thank everybody in this thread ,
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c4-tech-performance/3901465-questions-for-anyone-who-installed-bilstein-shocks-84-to-87-a.html
because i was getting ready to drill a hole in the middle panel. i missed the fact that its removeable with a few 10mm bolts!

Wow those old shocks are completely worn out. I run Bilstein's shocks in my trucks, they make a big difference in ride quality.
I know that my shocks are worn out as well as they make a swooshing noise on bumps.

Glad you swapped out the shocks! I did mine a few years ago and was amazed at what a difference it made. I think people see the low miles on the cars and figure they have to be good when time did it's damage before they could get miles put on them.

The improvements in handling are staggering!!!!!
I was expecting about 25% of the improvement that i revieved.
I went out last night and put the car through the paces and it i would say that i would like an even stiffer (slower rebound) ride than with the HD version of the bilsteins. They are amazing yes but i want even stiffer of a ride.
this is a base car so ill leave them as is but im looking at a z51 to make it a streetable road course track car and i may end up going with a coil over conversion
i need a video about how spring rates and struts work.

life/work has been pretty demanding and i parked the vette and havnt done anything at all.
TODAY i start tearing into my valve covers.
there is quite a leak spilling onto the exhaust manifold so ill tear these out and refurb them and listen to helicopter ground school in the background. two birds one stone.

i didnt get too far before datenight arrived.
i ran my compression test on this 136k miles car and she is solid!
keep in mind im at altitude up here at the foot of the rockies.
this car has along crank and i suspected injectors. i could smell fuel on 3,2,6. and when i cranked for compression test with all plugs out i could smell fuel out the holes. i will do the furl line pinch test to verify snd isolate the injectors to be sure before ordering a new set.
you can see the line from fuelsitting im guessing.

VT, how many miles on the head? With the plugs out, I would do a leak down test to see how good your heads are.
My neighbor has a 87 dodge w250 truck with a 360 in it. I did a compression test/leak down test on it. We averaged 135-140 psi just like you and the leak down test showed leakage hi leakage bypass the rings. The 360 book says it has 8 to 1 compression new.
My 2005 LQ9 engine compression ranged from 190-200 psi, with almost no leakage. That's 10:1ish compression.
My 02 dodge D250 5.9L cummins diesel 24v is 400+psi in all six cylinders, with a low 457000 km's That's 18 to 1 compression

Mike, there are 220k klms.
it actually does NOT look like anybody has been into this engine other than one of the valve cover seals.
got the valve covers off. found alot of grit in the valley depressions on the top surface of the heads. weird.

sludge and magnetic material under valve covers
Hi all,
I did get the valve covers off last night and i found what looks like the remains of sludge in the engine. i have been using high detergent too tier oil (mobil 1) since purchase and i have achieved nice hot temperatures and i believe that the heads are very likely far cleaner now than if i had pulled the vc's off when i purchased the car a year ago.
In the low spot of the heads (iron headed 86) i found VERY dark oil, and buildup of sludge. some of which is magnetic no different than what a person would see adhered to a magnetic drain plug. the tip of my flathead is magnetic and you can see the material standing proud off the tip. the meagnetic material is not as big as it looks. but it stacks off the tip and makes it appear as shards.
My suspicion is that it is wear material from the rockers/pushrod/spring assembly.
if the engine had a high amount of sludge up here those metal components would not have travelled down to the pan.
anyway, engine runs strong with great compression (above) and leakdown of 5-7% which is amazing considering 220000 klms. 136000miles.
ugh. i HHHAAATTTEEEE rtv. cork and hylomar or blue rubber felpros ftw.
cracked snorkel
drip coolant from tb hose. dark dirty oil with sludge in low spots. oil changes have always smelled awful
metallic sludge

i belive these tiny shiny bits have resided up in the heads for a long time and likely from rocker wear. thoughts? id rather not go through the process of removing rockers and resetting rocker lash. engine runs excellent.

Just ordered the bosch 3 22lbs injectors. looking fwd to it. now i will pull apart the intake and clean up 32 years worth of sand and dirt and grit.
nothing worse than popping the gorgeous clamshell hood and seeing the remains of a dirt monster who took a dump on the TPI.

^^^. WOWOWOW dirty.
compared to my first engine refurb a few years ago (on an iron head 85) this is going about 100x faster.
